  • Maibec Cedar Shingle panels ...shrinking

    I'm currently completing a project in charlotte,nc

I chose the Maibec shingle panel for the current job we're doing after comparing the big 3 choices (cedar valley, shakertown). After 2 months (stain is Sikkens- 3-coat sys.) the 8' panels have shrunk a 1/2" from side to side. This has been enough to expose /telegraph all the joints on the wall. The panels measured exactly 8' during install. We took great care in butting the joints tightly to ensure no visible seams but we had no warning that any shrinkage would occur. The south facing walls have shrunk to create joints that are unacceptable and we 're waiting to see if the other walls will visibly shrink also.
Maibec has responded to this problem by instructing me to cut out the offending shingles and face nail with stainless finish nails.
Has anyone encountered similar issues ? What has been your experience ?

    thanks for your input

Re: Maibec Cedar Shingle panels ...shrinking

Were there any other factors like wet sheathing, wet panels before install ?
I'm assuming these panels are plywood with shingles attached to the face.
Has this happened before with Maibec? (if they're willing to cop to it...)
Half an inch seems llike a lot. I don't think there should be any shrinkage. Strange.
We don't use panel systems so we don't have experience with this happening.

The material was delivered to the site and kept wrapped-up. It measured exactly 8' when we installed it. The material on the south facing walls measures 95 5/8" on average. The sheathing is dry but the siding is also furred-out with rainslicker so it's actually contacting the shtg.

Yes it's 3/8" plywood with 3 course of white cedar. I can only believe that the plywd has shrunk.

I also have no experience with those panels, but...

I would expect the shrinkage to be between shingles, not over the entire panel. I've never seen plywood shrink 3/8" or 1/2". Houses with sheathing and no siding left to sit for entire seasons don't experience that much plywood movement. Exactly what is the plywood... how many plies, etc.?
