    JLC University - Advertising/Marketing System

Money is the life blood of any business. As such, it must be spent wisely, not at: “I think I’ll try this” or that idea.

So when you decide to do some advertising, how do you decide what type? To make that decision you must first understand that advertising serves one purpose, to let people know you exist, what you do, and how to contact you. So “Bob’s Construction, Inc.” doesn’t cut it. Just what in construction does Bob do?

Truck signs, job signs, business cards, billboards, and the many things like coffee cups are all aspects of advertising. But the advertising must not be an opportunity for your sign painter his artistic talents. Use simple fonts, large text, contracting colors (not gold on white) and easily read.

Marketing on the other hand, attempts to make a direct connection between you and the customer, or potential customer. Marketing is “relationship building.” Here’s your opportunity to let them know how you feel about them. And let’s face it. When we hire someone we also want that “connection” to exist otherwise we don’t hire them either. Furthermore, that “connection” must be made, and validated by with your staff, your subs and their staff, your suppliers - everyone that comes in contact with the customer. So marketing never stops, even after the job is completed.

Here’s what happened to me recently to give an idea of “bad” marketing in the form of customer service after their marketing initially got me as a customer.

The broadband card for my Mac laptop died. I called Verizon and the guy walked me thru the procedure to try to fix the problem. He couldn't, and decide the card was bad and told me to take it to a Verizon place to they could do a diagnostic on it. But he failed to tell me to call them first to see if they had a “tech” dept. I went to the store I bought it from - in the mall. I hate the mall and almost never go there. They did not have a tech dept., being just a booth on an aisle. Off to another place that had a tech dept. After waiting about 40 minutes (there was a line) the tech guy took a new card out of a package and sure enough, it worked - mine was bad. That was the extent of the "diagnostic."

Do you think he just gave me that new card? Nope. He told me Verizon would send me a new on and I'd have it in two days. Then I’d have to send my bad one back in the prepaid Fed-X box. All of that additional cost to them, and delay to me, but that’s their “procedure.”

My Hp scanner will not work with the newest OS for Mac - Leopard. So I got on HP’s web site to download an updated driver which I was sure they would have, but I was wrong. It’s been in the “making” since Nov. 7, 2007. Result: I went to Office Max and bought a new Epson flatbed scanner, and it works with Leopard, plus their web site also had an upgraded driver that provided more goodies for the scanner.

Verizon irritated me as a customer. HP lost me as a future customer. Epson is my new “supplier.”

Nothing - NOTHING we do or say that involves a customer is ever to be thought of as minor, small, unimportant, or insignificant. NEVER! So for all of their marketing budget, Verizon and HP STILL did not provide what the “marketed.”

So how does one “market”, in what ways, and at what cost?

To this day I use what I learned in a high school class that’s called The Scientific Method” (TSM). As it can be a tool in marketing, or any other business or personal problem for that matter is this way: On a sheet of paper, make a list of every possible way you can think of to market your business.

On separate sheets list only one at the top, of the above list. Then draw a line down the center of the sheet. On the left side list all pros, and on the right side list all cons. Remember, that’s done on a separate sheet for each item from the original list. When you have competed, Take the sheets that have the most “pros” and the least” cons. The things to concentrate in your marketing program should only be those items with the most “pros”. To those, put a cost factor, and go from there.

I use TSM for business problems of all sorts because it eliminates emotion and forces me to the rational realities to find the correct solution to any problem.

With so many that may be slow or slowing up, or just trying to hang on, I thought that this would be an appropriate time to "BUMP" The passion that was Sonny.

As some of you may know this man was instrumental in turning my business around, as well as becoming a great friend that looked forward to the 2 a.m. phone calls just because he wanted to help. And boy did he ever.

I will be forever grateful to the Lykos family for sharing Sonny with me. I implore all of you that may need some insight that Sonny always seemed to offer with charisma and passion, to re-read some of these posts and topics.

If one person learns something that is all it takes to make a legacy.

Rest in Peace my friend, Sonny.

You do need to watch getting typecast into a sector, especially if it isn't the one you want to be in. More on that later...

(DID I use that right there and their are my weakness - Lavrans??).
It's really fairly easy. There is "here" with a t. it's a place thing.
They're is they and are put together.
If it isn't a place thing, and isn't a contraction of they and are, it must be their (as in, they're looking for their car over there=they are looking for the car they own in that place).
Thank you Beezo - that is encouraging. We are going into year 3 just this Spring. I feel like we should know our niche but really we do not. A huge renovation would be too much and we would need to hire. Med. is best as we can manage it well and keep quality in check. Small 2 to 3 day projects are okay as fillers. I appreciate the reassurance that its okay to not know. Experience will tell.

    Thanks,
    Nicole
Heck, Nicole, I'm going on 8 years and am still trying to figure out what I'm doing, what my niche should be, and what I prefer to do. Some would accuse me of being too much of a liberal :-). At some point I need to just choose, but you should just be getting an idea of what your true strengths are now. An aside is that it might be time to look over and modify your business plan with the information you have now.

My books show it, my taxes forms show it. This year I did not have that type of job and I started out slow.

Guess I am hoping to encourage you to hold on a little longer. Most all of us have been there and wondered if it was worth it. I still wonder at times. But it is not for too long and I move on.

    Lavrans,
The designer was referred and I like the simplicity and stylle of the site she did for my friend. She does the design and sets up the host site. She also does maintenance at an hourly rate. She is not nearby, so all communication is by email but am confident about my choice. She is a Grandma and has been going steady for some years now - lives on a lake in Northern Alberta. she will charge me 800. and 45 per hour for maintenance when we require it.

I had been close to hiring another young guy - local and did not like his sites at all. They all looked the same and he wanted to sell me on web site optimization and wanted to use the site aggressively to market. I just did not like his style nor his prices $1000 min for a generic templated site, 2000 and up for custom designed site.

My one question is this - the lady up North said that Web site search optimization had no guarantees and was just something the big companies sell to make big bucks. True?

    Thanks,
    Nicole

    Nicky- on website designers:
    1. do you know them?
    2. did you check them out (even if you know them?)
    3. what is there service for you? Just design, design & maintenance, etc.

One of my big gripes about website designers is that I see a lot of people get a minimal product that they wait a long time for. Your designer should be able to set up a simple temporary site with an intro, small gallery and contact information in a matter of hours. Then you wait for your full site. Anything less is, well, less.

Also, you need to be able to update parts of your site easily and quickly, so that means they need to be on call to change things for you, or give you simple, easy directions on how to do it yourself.

Marathon of chores and paperwork though a 6 mile run along the beach sounds fabulous. With twins 2, son 5 and son 6 there is not much time. I understand the importance of excercise and mental health but the marathon these days is the business and the kids. Once every 3 to 6 weeks my mother in law comes and keeps everybody loved and busy while I catch up. My hope is that the kids run me hard enough that I stay in shape and then in my 40's I can job along with them. Even now instead of rockclimbing I belay the boys but I figure I had my time and will again - now its there turn.

when you say 'marathon' do you mean that you are 'running' around a lot for your MIL. or do you actually run a marathon? i find that my weekly 6 mile beach run help me to relax and keep things in focus.

    Dan,

The door hangers have been effective. Likely delivered 200 and got one lead turned into a bathroom renovation, fence project, and many leads and referalls, got one lead that may turn into another bathroom renovation when we close the sale, and a couple of calls that did not get passed budget.

Small jobs are a pain in the a** but we are still building our reputation as well trying to manage and be kind to our family - do not want to get in over our heads. I do wonder how to make the shift - seems like we are attracting the smaller projects even though my husband as a lead carpenter has tackled many 400k full renovations.

    Lavrans,

MY vehicle is not branded as it is in rough shape an dnot sure represents us well. Husband truck signs are basic black and white but think they look professional - not high end. The signs are great and people ask questions.

Web site - have decided to hire a designer to do it. I have provided deposit and should see results in a month (she is busy). I can not manage everything and I think the site (working on it myself ) was bogging me down.

Sorry about the late response I do the marathon when my mother in law is in town. I am exhausted.

as with all types of advertising, you never know what one will bring in that next call. but as long as you are doing something everday to promote your business then it will keep rolling.

flyers, handing out cards, asking for refferels. ad in paper, yellow pages, mailers etc.

and yes people do call several, but it is your job to convert then to a client.

selling them on your company, your professionalism, and that you can do the job correctly, and at more money then most others, but you provide value and will finish the job correctly.

Anyways I wanted to comment that we finally got our truck signs up! We alaso have been hitting the neighborhoods we are working in and that are desirable with flyers that I created with full color and photos accompanied with a working in your neighborhood letter. We have had quite a few calls from them and landed teh job we are doing now for the most wonderfull client.
I deliver these myself and I enjoy being proactive and walking. It is likely not the most productive way to get them out but its no money out of pocket.
We also put an Ad in a community newspaper - no responses yet and the specialist marketing guys say you can not judge untill its ran for a length of time. $100 bucks for that one - might discontinue as the flyers are proving to be more effective. Web site is still on hold as we really took a hit this winter but I have been working on making my own and am surprised that it is not so hard to create a basic page - maybe this will be the start and we can upgade later.

    Nicole
Nicole- a couple questions- When you're out there delivering fliers, is your vehicle branded?

Web site- I'm betting your web access company has a website editor, and probably a whole set of templates you can use to get a basic site up pretty easily. It took me about 2 hours to set up my site. I think that for small companies like mine, a website is mostly an ultra portable portfolio that allows people to easily see my work. You should be able to set that up pretty quickly.

For signs- how do people know if they are helping? Is it mostly from an increase in calls, do people find it easier to approach and introduce themselves? What are the benefits. What are the problems- Is having to keep road rage in check really the only concern? ;-0

Nicole - please let us know how the door hangers go.

I have had very poor results from advertising - I don't think I ever got a single job from an ad. I'm not a very good salesman, and if someone is calling you from your ad, they're also calling other contractors, so you're either competing on price or you have to convince them that you're the only one they want.

I think I'm fortunate to have enough people calling me as referrals that my sales job is a lot easier than it would have been from a cold call. At this point I advertise only as a way of keeping/increasing visibility. I advertise in a quarterly news magazine whose editorial content I like, in the local Audubon Society's newsletter, and the occasional newsletter or event booklet for groups that I either support or whose membership I think will be a good fit for our product.

My sense (unscientifically) is that there needs to be completely different marketing for companies on the handyman/small repair end than on the major remodel end, and new construction something different again. The smaller your average job, the more leads you need, the wider a net you have to cast. If I get one good lead a month that's enough for me. But others may need a good lead every day.
