Iphone Apps

I know it's been discussed in the past, but I recently purchased an iphone and have been trying to find it's uses on the job site...

Recently our crew has been making arches for the openings between 13 beams on a very large porch... Because this is a 19th century restoration every opening is a different size, and so is the radius for every opening...

I know the formula using the construction master pro calculator but I was wondering if anyone has found an application that does this in an even simpler fashion...

I would also be interested in an app that calculates arc lengths and that would help with ellipses...

Any ideas....

I know that I'm just looking for a way to be lazy and not have to remember the formulas, but really, isn't that the point of technology?:)

Someone (and I think it was Gary) mentioned Supper buds, Not sure what they are, but do they work as hearing protection?

After all this talk I'm looking into getting one, should I look for an Armadillo Gear case or the like?

I've been pretty happy with the Otterbox Defender case. But you will definitely need some type of protective case.

I just bought " BuildCalc - Advanced" It costs $20.00. But talk about wow!!! its incredible all the stuff this will do. I dont understand half of it...but it has EXTREMELY easy to use Help menus. That are accessed just by pressing down for 3 seconds on the feature you want to use. A menu pops up and has illustrations and a walkthrough of how to use the feature. Its almost like having GaryK right at your finger tips to explain how to use the calculations

Totally worth the $20.00! I like it much better than Inchcal+ or Carpenters helper PRO because of this help menu. They all will perform the same function. But some times its hard to remember the proper formulas. Thats where Buildcalc excels. Check it out

wow just found out it does Compound miters and spring angle math too!

I just bought this one too:

seems really cool to take a picture of anything and put the dimentions right on it. Then come home and input that into SU...Yeah

also "Time Capture" is a great app. Probably the best one for keeping track of By the hour work. Take pictures then email the invoice with all the bill info to the customer. Really a great one.

This looks like a very good app. If you haven't had a chance, check out his blog: http://buildcalc.com/blog.html. One of things I noticed is that he's pretty committed to improving the app.

From his blog, it looks like he's just completed a couple of nice features for the upcoming version. I copied some of the blog text below. The ellipses ("...") indicate where I've trimmed text.

After many hours the last two nights, I finally figured out how to architect the larger font in-app help! I finished a couple of tests of a prototype and it works like a charm. Tomorrow I will start the modification of the 60+ help files to enable this feature to be in version 1.3 ... but first, some sleep!

Now, here is the latest status. For the past couple of nights, I have been working on putting together some of the changes for version 1.3. In doing so, I have learned a couple of things:

2. The Construction Masterâ„¢ Pro Trig emulation is complete! Up to this point, this feature has by far the biggest coolness to difficulty ratio. I need to type up some instructions before sending out the beta but here's the gist: to switch from CMP to CMPT, either (a) flip a switch in the BuildCalc settings or (b) swipe your finger across the [Length] [Width] and [Height] keys. Repeat to return back to the CMP. The 12 year old kid in me really had fun doing this one.

The Ipod touch supports all of the apps that the Iphone does.

You may want to consider one of them.

That 30bucks a month is totally worth it. The phone is primarly work related so its a write off.
The tools it has that can be used for work will make you money. Also being able to email your clients pictures of jobsite progress is very usefull.

I used this new Dimentions app that I got to make this picture for my design in SU. Its so usefull! Sure you can just make a drawing and write it down...But Im not going to work on this for a week or so..and The odds of me losing my hand written drawing are pretty high. This stays on my phone and I emailed it to myself onsite. To store it under my clients folder on my PC.

Also shopping for Moisture meters on Amazon and Ebay while listening to Gary Katz lecture on Moisture control at the Road show, was very cool!
