  • Wet mortar-bed shower pan under existing tile

I'm regrouting a shower floor with a mortar-bed pan - it's the original grout, about 20 years old and cracked. I currently have removed about half the old grout and am seeing a lot of wet spots appearing, and when I dig a bit I can see that the mortar bed is wet. I read a similar topic (https://forums.jlconline.com/forums/...wet-under-tile) and at least some of the replies indicated that this was normal. I have no reason to believe the pan was installed incorrectly, although the weep holes might be clogged after all these years.

Do I need to wait for the bed to dry out? I can let it sit, but how long would that take - and how long should I wait before considering this a problem that requires a pro? It's been 5 to 7 days since the shower has been used and the bed is still pretty damp.

Also, is there anything I can do from within the drain to make sure the weep holes are open? Many thanks for help/advice.
