  • Sealing OSB

I installed a subfloor using fire rated structural OSB, white fire coating in one side bare on the other side.I installed it bare face up.i know that it is customary to seal OSB with redgard or similar product for a waterproof membrane.these products are expensive and I would need 2 coats,I have 500 sq.ft to do.the cost would be around $700 and that is not a viable option for me.I do not require a waterproof membrane as I am not tiling a bathroom or wet room, knowing that thin set can not be applied to bare OSB i need a more cost effective sealing product. My question is can I seal the OSB with a paint primer? A product like KILZ or similar? I have found zero information on the internet of possible cost effective ways to seal OSB except for redgard type products.

Garry, this is a peer to peer forum for construction pros.

Given your question, I have to believe you are not familiar with tile installation methods and good practices. I would highly recommend hiring a competent tile installer.

No, KILZ or similar will not work. Redguard or Hydro Ban (what we use) will work.

I'm confused, is this a tile installation and if so, you are installing on OSB?

if $700 breaks your budget you can't afford tile to begin with. start looking at sheet goods
