  • Tile over lath and plaster

Remodeling a bathroom originally built in the 1930's with the shower added in the 1980's. Removed the Faux tile panels and decided on the best course of action of the next step. 2 walls are original wood lath and plaster with some layers of paint and spots of adhesive as well as a few places where the plaster would need to be patched. Lath and other plaster is all in excellent condition. I think I would like to simply patch the plaster where needed and tile directly over the existing wall. What's the best option for waterproofing/preparing the surface?

Sight unseen i would tell you to degrease all the walls to rid all paint / dirt and look into a primmer specific to the thin set you are using. Any substrate preparation should be done with a cementitious product. Remember to use a reputable manufacture. Good luck!

We use a product called RedGard over our lath and plaster substrate.
