  • Social Media & Contractors

Matt Risinger is a builder/remodeler in Austin, someone I have met and follow on various social media outlets (Facebook, Twitter, You Tube). His ability to use social media is the absolute best I've seen for a small builder. He does blogs, You Tube videos, posts on Twitter, Instagram, Facebook. He is very good at doing this consistently, not too much not too little, not coming across as using SM as a hard sale or worthless information. Most of what he posts is very interesting, he has done an excellent job of being a "though leader" in the industry. He is also willing to share his techniques and methods on how he uses SM. He has developed enough following on his You Tube videos to make some serious money from Google.

I have also seen some of his stuff on the JLC site.

Thanks Allan! I've learned alot from watching others and how they do things. I also read a book that started this all for me. "The New Rules of PR & Marketing" by David Meerman Scott. I highly recommend this book to ANY small business owner. http://amzn.to/1SLc7LV

How much time do you spend doing this everyday? Is it hours? Is it all of your free time?

It just seems like a lot to manage all at once. I don't use social media and I'm not sure that I want to. With my wife and (3) children, it seems that it would take away from that time together - I am already gone all day.

      Just my thoughts.....

The time it takes depends on what you do and which social media outlets used. A Facebook or Twitter post can take less than a minute, you might do these couple times a week, so it is negligible. If you write something on a blog, the time depends on the length of what you write and your writing skills. Typically active social media people might blog twice a month?

If you have a Houzz page, which setup can be done quickly, uploading photos or answering questions about your photos can take 10-15 minutes a month. You Tube videos of a minute or less can be done quickly with an iPhone.

So the totality of these really don't take much time. More than time it takes commitment, consistency, and effort.

Matt has taken videos to a whole new level, I'm sure they do take some time, I'm guessing at least an hour or so?. But in doing so he has really elevated his online presence and credibility. The main thing is he is just really good at picking relevant topics, content, and production.

But overall social media does not need to take a lot of time.

          Re: Social Media & Contractors

Thanks for the info, as I don't use it and so wouldn't have known how long things take to do. And I hope that Matt nor anyone does not think that I see them as wasting their time with their efforts managing social media.

I am very rural and have a slow dial up connection. Uploading photos to Houzz has to done in town, about 20 miles away at the library - even JLConline doesn't always work for me. Nor am I any kind of a writer. So, if I wanted to use it, that end of it would slow me down.

But anyway, I am glad that it works for others. I am just not sure if I will ever try it.

LOL, my thoughts exactly. I'm thinking between "following" everyone and publishing my own material to be "followed", I should just spend some time inventing a new form of social media. Then I could quit building and have more time to work on the IPO.

Donald Trump is very public. Brad Kelley, not so much. Does Trump get a good return on his time and money spent being public? Yes, but it's not money, it's ego.

Larry I am certain that Matt (or you, me, anyone) can have a nice social media presence and still watch the Kardashians. And you could even follow them on Twitter.

Seriously, if a contractor wants to increase business or keep their name in the public eye, FB, Twitter, Houzz, You Tube, Instagram, and Blogs are certainly ways to do this in today's social media world. And best I can tell there aren't many small contractors doing it better than Matt Risinger.

Matt, I've heard you mention that book before, I am going to order it today.

                  Re: Social Media & Contractors

Just got an email from OSI and it had an article about 5 websites that contractors should be familiar with. Matt Risinger's was the only one listed that was not a major manufacturer or supplier. That means someone is taking notice of his stuff.

                      Re: Social Media & Contractors

Ok guys... kidding aside. Pick ONE of these social outlets and get on it 5 minutes a day. Instagram is a hot new one in Austin. I'm on it for 2-3 minutes at a time, 3x per day. I'm interacting with Architects who will refer me business and I stay top of mind. Find out where the people interact who might refer business to you and get on that platform. 5 minutes a day. That's it. Or, start slow and do it 2x per week for 5 minutes. You'll see results, but it takes time and consistency. Matt Risinger

Not saying anything against Matt or anyone who is using social media at all. I am at the point where I am thinking about hanging it up in maybe the next 2 years. I think it is great that some of the guys do these things. I am too old to want to do much more than what I already do on the computer, would have to learn how to use the new stuff. These guys have and it works for them.

I do wonder about some of the guys and have to wonder how they get it done every day. I almost have trouble finding enough time to look at this site and my emails and then fill out my paperwork daily. I cannot imagine being on here a couple of times a day even if only for a few minutes each time.

This is very cool, I saw these blogs and i really like it. A lot of things are very interesting to me. I would also like to keep my blog if I knew how haha. With age, I do not keep up with these technologies, for me it is too difficult. I am happy to watch your progress. Have a nice day!

We try to provide content through our social media but it takes time and commitment like Allan Edwards said. But when you compare to a blog on your website it's not much time. Eventually we want to add a blog but first need to create the right content.
