  • BuildCalc for Andriod

It is available for those of you with Andriod.

On the iOS platform it is the best construction calculator I have ever used. My opinion of course.

I have been beta testing the iPad version it is about a week out, great for old eyes.

Ben, you should spend more time here ;-)

I got the buildcalc for iOS on Tom's recommendation. I have not really given it a full workout, but it's way better than my construction master from calculated industries.

You should offer up short cuts without a hard sell and hang out every once in a while ;-)

        Phil -

Yes, in hindsight, I could have toned it down a bit. Sorry, I guess I got a bit carried away ... kind of like a new dad.

And you're right - I should post. I've been lurking on this forum for a number of years now and have always hesitated. Thanks for the invite!

          Ben
Commercial posts of any kind are not allowed here. If you've read the forum for any length of time you already know that I'm the biggest supporter of builder-software_developers going and will give you a shout out whenever I can - but the rules is the rules and I have to be fair to everyone.

Phil and others - your suggestion for Ben to put a link in his post would be a good one normally, but since he is a developer somewhat different rules apply. A link in a message is considered a commercial post if it's by the company making the product - and that's a no-no. No doubt I will hear from half a dozen advertisers asking me to remove the links - at which point I'll be obligated to do exactly that.

My suggestion is make a signature and put your URL in it (like I do). We actually encourage that so builders know who they're talking to - and it serves the same purpose.

I'd also appreciate it if you'd contact me privately - I'd be interested in doing a review of BUildCalc for one of my columns in Remodeling or JLC - but you need to contact me offline so I can go over the criteria and how we handle NFR software. Use moucon_at_yahoo_dot_com (it's the shortest to type) - or jstoddard[at]mountainconsulting[dot]com

Thanks, Joe, I appreciate the good moderation of the forum. I've overwritten my original post to get it back into compliance.

              Re: BuildCalc for Andriod

I have used BuildCalc on my Droid X and love it. I also have Construction Master on my device as well as 4 of the actual construction master calculators scattered throughout tool bags and the shop.

Conctruction Master on my android duplicates what my handheld calcs already did with out major additional features. What I like better about BuildCalc is that the baluster and stair functions are graphical and interactive. It actual draws the stringer layout on screen.

Another feature I like better is that when you hit the yellow conv key to change to the sub function of the key, the key actually changes to the function you are hoping to use. For instance the "9" key relabels itself to "MM" so you don't have to refocus your eyes on the small letters again. Very slick!

Always loved my Construction Masters but this is a big upgrade in features.

                Phil
What makes it "way better" than Construction Master ? I have the CM software and it seems to do the job - so what is different about BuilderCalc?

To be honest - I still have and still use daily my physical CM IV I purchased in probably 1990 or so. That's 20 years of daily use - half of it on dirty jobsites or banging around in a truck. Very few things are going to have that kind of track record.

                    Joe,

Is it ok if I answer your question? Let me know. Do you want the simple basics or the in depth? I do not have the CM on my phone so I can only address the calculator, not the app. (If your willing to pay for the CM for my iPhone I'll do a side by side;-))

No - I already know your opinion. Phil made the "it's way better" statement, I want to know why he feels that way. Nobody gets away with "way better" or "way worse" without at least a "because... XYZ" to go along with it. :-)

Thanks for the heads up on this program. I went to the web site and checked out the video's.

I have the CM pro on the android phone but after looking at this, I will download it and probably use it more. I like the indepth help features with pictures and the ability to email layouts.

If you don't like it after a couple of weeks let me know. I believe in this app so much I'll cover your cost if you don't like it. (This offer is only for Gary, so don't bother asking)

Thanks for the offer but I am sure I will not be taking you up on it. As I get more into the program I am liking it a LOT.

We will be getting a Lenovo Thinkpad when they are released next month and this has earned a place on the main page.
