Default Anyone using "The Gutster"

I ordered all 3 of theses tools for an upcoming demo job. They are 3 to 5 days out to be delivered. Just wondering how well thay work on roofing shingles? I have a shingle tear off that can wait if these things are all that. The videos on their site didn't show a lot of roofing being tore off.http://www.thegutster.com/

They are AWESOME!

I use mine for everything and anything. It just eats it up. Flooring, plaster and lath, tiles, wire lath.

Great nail puller too. You will not regret the purchase.

How are they with asphalt roofing?

I don't know...never used it for that, but it tears up flooring like a machine.

I cannot imagine it NOT working well because the sharpened tapered fork end penetrate deep under layers of material so all you have to do it lever the handle down and everything comes up. For instance, 3 courses of oak flooring at a time, usually in full pieces.

I just demoed some wall tile the other day with wire mesh and a heavy mud job. The tile came off in 2' sheets....Literally peeled it off the wall.

They'll probably work fine but there's nothing wrong with a tearoff shovel and the handle is longer. I assume you already have one?

Great tool! I think it would work for shingles, though like David says, not really any better than a tearoff shovel.

The only disadvantage to the Gutster that I can see is that it is unnecessarily heavy to yield on a roof. Definitely don't want to drop it on someone!

We are doing a lot of demos these days, and I saw a real uptick in production when I got a couple.

Not for asphalt shingles. You don't need the power and weight for shingles.Handle needs to be longer.

You don't really tear off shingles. You pull the nails(which you can't see) and the shingles slide off.

I have used a "shingle eater" forever, for thousands of squares.Don't have time to link to it,but it's got a "hand" on the bottom of it that has V notches as nail pullers.Has a long angled handle. There are other variations, but the others all get left on the ground if you let a bunch of guys take their pick.

You can usually find these at a tool store or roofing supply yard.Have never seen them at Depot or others.Bout $50.

If you don't do this regular be prepared to be real sore.Hands too.

as stated they are a great demo tool but not for roofing...

I got one last year to try out and me and my guys argue over it for demo days. I need to order some more this year ;-)

How does it work for tearing headers out of an old door way?

I used something like that but built out of a square tube steel bar and used it to tear the rafters off a shed for example. We used them for any demo work. Are these things fairly sturdy? Take a mans weight to use as leverage for example? Or two LOL.

This one over the years has proven to be the best for asphalt shinlges by "natural selection" as the crew will look to grab these first:

The small one is handy if you need to be finicky around step and chimney flashing.

Also pretty good with cedar shake siding and vinyl..I've seen others use them for oak flooring but that is how they get bent, they don't quite have the b*lls for that long term.

I'll be doing the same thing this week...I just ordered the 32" contractor bar. I'm looking forward to trying it out...not.

I just got and used the 32" contractor Gutster today. Great tool. Made demo-ing plaster and tile MUCH easier. You have to be careful what you wedge against....you can generate a lot of leverage.

Teeth come powder coated and not sharp, but I'll take a grinder to the chisel points if needed.

That's the one I was considering for general demo, thanks for the input.

Just get all three of them, they're only 119.00. I tried all of them today, shingles, sheathing, tar caked flashing, twisted some crooked joist over with ease. Also used as a jack to push a sagged opening up. My helpers went to town on demo with them, probably paid for themselves first day.
