Default cutting paint into wallpaper

Hey guys,
I am currently installing bead board wanescote in a bathroom that has wall paper and I need to cut trim paint into it. The only places I'm worried about are where the chair rail cap meets the wall.
I'm looking for the best way to mask off the two without fearing the worst---wall paper tear off---but it must also hold a super clean line.
Regular old blue tape could work but again--I can't tear the paper and I want it to look like the paper started at the cap.

I know---probably seems like either an oversight or an easy solution.

Any stellar tips would be great.

Thanks,

Jon Nelson

You could have the beadboard and chair rail finished painted before installing it.

If you use regular blue tape and start with a light coat of clear finish it will seal the tape and prevent bleed to the wall paper.

The Frog tape is designed to seal well at the edges and remove cleanly, but your mileage may vary.

If I understand you right you have not installed the trim yet but the wall paper is still there. One way I have done it is get a roll of the brown paper that goes with the tape and paper machines. Tape that to the wall but use the tape only in a few places to keep it on the wall You are actually going to tape it under the location of the trim. Most of the time a 6 inch wide strip is stiff enought to keep from falling down and into your paint. After you have the paper in place install your trim right on top of it with several inches of the paper sticking out above the trim. Paint away. When it is good and dry take a new razor blade and change them frequently and cut the brown paper away from the trim. That should keep the paint off the wall paper.

I've seen the frog tape, seems like a lighter tack. I still have some concerns with that, the reg green and definitely the blue tape.

I started to use the yellow tape from from Sherwin - Williams for cut ins. Its for faux painting. Very light tack. Needs to come off the same day or it may fall off under its own weight or any surface contamination. $10 - $15 / rolll but worth it.

Guys,

Thanks for the advice. I just put on the first coat of primer and caulked the chair rail to the wallpaper. I went to a local paint store this morning, found the frog tape but the guy said it may peel the wall paper, they did not have the delicate surfaces version. They did have delicate surface blue tape, so I went with that. And I pulled it off after the first coat, so as not to let it dry on the wall too much. i think it will work.
Off to clamp some doors up while the caulk dries. It's humid here so could be a while.

Thanks again.

There's a purple version too spec'd 30 day. A bit more tack than yellow but also labeled for faux painting. Never have seen it retail though.

I do this for shoe molding, I use drywall tape. After you score with a knife (to break any paint conenctions) you can just pull the tape out.
