Thread: Workmanship?

  1. #1

    Default Workmanship?

    Hi folks,

We had some exterior carpentry work done to a 25 year-home prior to painting. Mostly clap boards and trim. After they painted it - it looked different and we wanted an opinion as to whether or not this looks OK. We're not looking for perfection - just an opinion. The 2 photo included are parts of the entire job which cost about $5000 total. Thank you very much.

You will discover that these forums are relative to contractor to contractor discussions about technical and business issues. This is not a venue for homeowner discussions about quality issues as there are numerous variables relative to any business transaction that we are not privy to in making a determination relative to proper work for proper value.

That being said, did you get any references or look at any pictures of work the contractor had previously completed? Was there any discussion of how the work was to be detailed? Stating that the job was $ 5K doesn't really tell us anything as we can't relate to what was done or supposed to be done for the money. You must also realize that 5K in your locale doesn't relate to 5k in say, San Francisco.

There are no standards for repair work such as you had done. This is why you need to have a very good discussion and preferably a written contract attesting to what the expectations are prior to the start of work.

I do a lot of the type of work you wanted done and the results are seamless but the customer is usually paying by the hour so they can dismiss me at any time if they are not happy or continue on until their pocketbook tells them to stop or the job is carried to completion. The result of that approach is a number of long term customers and very nice results. You really need to work out the details in the beginning.
