You could drill and epoxy two of these into the side of the step one above the other. Be sure to orient both so that you can slip the post into them after the epoxy has set.

#2 won't work: It won't adequately resist the bending moment at the base. Assuming there is concrete of sufficient thickness and strength, core drill into it and set a galvanized pipe or smooth rod in epoxy - 1" minimum diameter. Drill a matching diameter hole in a 4x4 post. Friction fit and epoxy over the steel with shims to hold the bottom off the concrete surface. Go from there.

I like NW idea but think i would set pipe solid in post .mark for concrete and drill a hole big enough for wiggle room .fill with epoxy set post .when epoxy sets post is set for life .
thinking i could use a several big lags screwed into bottom of post instead of the pipe, cut the heads off leaving several inches to epoxy into concrete .
this was a timely thred ,i have this project coming up soon.

Interesting to me to read. I cannot tell you how many times I have been called in to repair a concrete step that has had the corner broken off due to how ever the post was set over the years. I have never really figured out if there is enough water that gets around the anchor point that does the freeze thaw thing that it cracks the concrete. Or if it is the constant wiggling of the post as folks grab it and use it.

It seems to me that the ones that survive the longest seem to be the ones that are core drilled into the concrete and here we seem to favor the rocktite or anchoring cement to set the post in place. So I guess a metal post set into place and then the wood forced over it would be a way to make it work.

Joseph, this base is similar to what you suggest.

I've never used it, I'm sceptical that it is as strong as they say, but for what it is worth, here's the link:

I seen Mike Holmes use drywall screws.
