Default Pocket Door Opening Height Limitation

I have a bearing wall that calls for a double 2x10 header over a 3'5" x 7'-0" pocket door. So the RO will need to be 7'5 3/4" tall according to the pocket door manufacturer, Hafele. I'm familiar with Johnson kits in that I could remove the track from the "box" frame that it is mounted to, and attach the track directly to the header, gaining an extra ~1" of height.

Does anyone know if I could assume the same with this brand? Right now I have about 6" available for the header, using the info from Hafele. And the engineer spec'd the header for a 2x4 wall, but it is a 2x6 wall. So with an extra inch in height, and going to a 3-ply header, I could get a triple 2x8 to fit.

    Thoughts?

    TIA

Can the header be moved to sit on top of the wall? To be a beam in the floor as opposed to a header in the wall.

I agree, a flush beam solves the hgt issue. Ask your designer/archy to spec it if for example you need a taller beam for joist hangars for say 9" or 11" sawn joists or I-joists. Then you can infill as needed for the new hardware!

    Tom,

Let me get this straight. Are you trying to squeeze a 7 foot pocket door in an 8 foot load bearing wall? If so, I'd look into an engineered header.

Header cannot be flush-framed. The bearing wall goes below rafters that run across the header, and are already in place. So, to put the header up into the rafters would require cutting all the rafters, then using hangers on both sides of the header, which I'm not going to do.

I was just wondering if anyone knew how much extra room I could gain for the header if I attached the pocket door track directly to the header.

I would call Hafelle and ask them. I looked at their site and the track matches the header it's attached too so maybe not. Can you use a different header configuration. Micro lam with a flitch plate?

The Hafelle pocket door kits do require all that they ask for is there a double top plate ? If so cut one out and move up header ,or cut the door
