Re: roller magnets
Do they have adjustable wheels? If so you may need to lower them. I have also found that if the grass is cut short around the house it helps in keeping the nails from getting knocked off the roller.

Re: roller magnets
What we use for roofing ...
They make a rolling magnet that is situated on a wide toothed rake.
Since you mentioned grass .... we have found this to pretty much pick up anything, as long as they've mowed within the past week or so.
We do very few roofs anymore and couldn't locate our magnets. However, one of our guys picked one (magnetic roller-rake) up at Horror Fright for, I believe, less than thirty dollars and it worked quite well; far better than our old rollers.
So, a trip to the Chinese Cheese Cake Factory, picked up an additional three, and it was under a hunnert dollars.

Re: roller magnets
I use this one:

Seems to work well and has adjustable wheels. I do ask that the grass be cut extra short before starting a roof.
If the grass is long or the ground is rough, I sometimes have to remove the nails frequently so they don't get brushed back off.
