In 2008 I started using Smartside for lap siding instead of Hardie cement and I like it much better.
Easier on the saws, lungs, ears and more forgiving of bad fork lift drivers. If someone missteps and walks on a pallet of Hardie, there is sure to be some breakage. Not so with LP Smartside. Hardie also always seems damp and cold like a basement.

I didn't know it at the time, but I had been using Smart trim with Hardie for a few years longer. I had trouble with Hardie trim swelling and after complaining my supplier substituted the LP product.

I Youtubed Smartside and the forth hit shows the back is OSB at 20 seconds in:

Charleston is a seismic zone. T-111 has shear value equal to plywood. How does SmartSide compare?

I suspect the 5/8 smart side is at least as strong as ply T-111. The 3/8 stuff I got at HD is really thin where the grooves are but it's surprisingly rigid.

It's possible the shed I'm building will collapse when the big one hits here!

    Thanks Pete,
The warranty sounds great and I liked working with the product. Certainly more than fiber cement siding.
I'd try out the LP trim product too as long as it's made with a smooth face

Funny that this thread just rejuvenated. I was just asked to build another building at the same site as the one that started my introduction to SmartSide. Only for this building they want something more substantial than the 3/8 material so I'll call around today to see if I can find the 5/8 but I didn't last time. I may have to go with 5/8 treated t-111 which wouldn't be my preference.

have the panel shipped in if you can't find it locally. Sometimes we don't want to pay shipping and will use what is available to us locally even though w no it is not what is best. Find out what shipping is. if it adds $500 to a 20k building that is no big deal.
    it is all perspective.

I haven't called around yet but last time I looked I was told I'd have to order a pallet. I'll also need it quicker than I'd likely get it if I have to order it. I'll call around and ask anyway though.

    Thanks,
    John

How does this stuff compare with Hardi price-wise? For the lap siding.
