Default drywalling over pine plank sheathing

Remodeling an addition where one of the walls was originally the outside of an exterior wall. House is circa 1932 and exterior sheathing is 1 x 8 pine boards gapped about 1/4". When originally finished, the wall was paneled right over the sheathing. I've removed the paneling so we can drywall.

Question is: Can we hang drywall directly to the pine board sheathing(after repairs are done), or should I fir it out or remove the planking & install osb or similar sheathing (for shear strength) then drywall over that?

If it's secure and flat you can.

looks like that would be a begining drywallers love affair. No need to worry if you missed the studs. About the only thing I would do is make sure everything is secured well, not sure I would use long screws and worry about the studs. You do not worry about it when you strap a ceiling, basically going into pine strips. Same here.

I was worried that as the planks expand & contract width wise with the change of seasons, I would get nail pops. LOL...no worries about missing the studs...

What about just applying a single course of 3/8" or 7'16" osb/ply'd directly to the plank sheathing. This should give you a good stable nailing base.
This maybe what you meant by furr out.
