Installing stairway skirting on finished stairs
I am trying to install stairway skirting on finished tiled stairs. The skirting was never added when stairs were built before I bought the house. I am having problems cutting the skirting and I am in no way a carpenter. The second step is shorter then the rest and the angles are a little different for each step which I am finding more difficult to cut. I'm looking for advice on how much it should cost or hints to help me better understand the process. Below are some pictures to explain what I'm trying to do. Any help would be greatly appreciated, thanks.

Re: Installing stairway skirting on finished stairs
After reading http://www.thisiscarpentry.com/2011/...-skirt-boards/. I wish I read this first. This might help my issues if I choose to start over.

From the looks of your pictures starting over is a good idea. If that is ceramic tile on those steps you really have your work cut out for you. Don't feel bad.
Everyone here has had to do many things over and over and over.......... trying to get some things even close to being right.

Roger, thanks, it is very frustrating doing over but I do want it to look right. Yes, it's ceramic tile.
Haha, I may have to resort to caulk after a few attempts lol.

Make yourself a template of the nosing and then just follow the scribing article steps, setting your scribe sticks to the highest riser and widest tread. I think if you do that it will fit great. Try it first with a piece of cardboard ripped to the skirt width. It will give you some practice at no mat'l. cost. Shouldn't be much different than any other skirtboard. No need for a lot of caulk.

I would cut a full size template out of masonite and make all the adjustments to it, then transfer the final to the skirt board.

Have things gotten this slow around here that we now reply to DIYers? He found the TIC article. What you should do is either leave it as is or hire a professional. When you hire a pro have him purchase some decent material too.
