Re: poll question for Kapex users
if that's sarcasm i hear at the end then ha, ha, ha ...........
otherwise that was somene else in the thread - i do stair work and interior trim work ( with an occasional custom ext. gate now and then)
in other words i'm in the non barbarian camp when it comes to how i treat my Kapex
So, i guess you don't have any input on the $10,000 question ???

Re: poll question for Kapex users
My guess, without seeing the armature is the insulation failed. The insulation is a thin "varnish". May have been a thin area that finely failed. If it was a thrown bar you would have seen it when you looked at the brushes. I've had armatures go bad, one threw a bar after a 5 weeks,(just out of warranty) the other two (reciprocating saws)where, crap got between the armature and field and wore the winding. I don't see how derbies could have been the issue on the Kapex. Stranger things have happened though.
The brushes are because it is a new armature, you should not seat old brushes to a new armature. Bearings, they could have pulled and used the old, but they did the right thing by replacing them.

Re: poll question for Kapex users
Tom, did you drive your family nuts? I can imagine you as a kid taking apart your birthday and Christmas gifts to see what makes them tick.
I ask because I have a friend who many find kind of strange in a good way. He can buy a Tormek to sharpen things but will spend days making something of his own often out of scraps and odds and ends. It never really works as well as a Tormek but he is so proud of it and all the money he saved even tho he might have days or weeks putting thing together, reading everything he can about them, machineing parts on a homemade lathe, throwing away his first prototype. His current project is to save gas he is making his own scooter out of a salvaged bike frame and either a chain saw motor or a weed eater motor. I believe the weed eater motor did not have enough to get him up a hill without his having to pedal but so far the chain saw tends to burn his leg if he does not sit spread eagle on the seat.
His parents told me once that as a kid he was always tearing apart things that worked just fine to see what was making them work.

Re: poll question for Kapex users
Beez, I have a friend who many years ago put a 1970s Mitsubishi 2 speed/4 speed transmission on a lathe he got out of the scrap yard, he still uses it. It is always an adventure visit his shop, why buy new when you can make your own.
Regards,
Dan

Re: poll question for Kapex users
Did??? I still drive a few crazy, it's entertaining to see them get frustrated over nothing. They have no clue I'm pulling their chain.
At a young age, I took many things apart, and put them back together. I prefer to buy the best, then modify it to my needs.
Our son took our first computer apart when he was 7, it was less than a week old. I looked at my wife and told her I hope he can put it back together because I have no clue. He did, it worked fine. I still blame him for not telling me to buy MicroSoft on their IPO, his lame excuse is, he wasn't born yet.
