stud finders
I just saw an ad on here for a Franklin Stud Finder. Does anybody have any experience with them? Can't seem to find a stud finder that doesn't have a high probability of lying to me.

Re: stud finders
I've been meaning to try that one, but haven't yet.
If anyone is using it, I'd be curious as well.

I'm not satisfied until a 1/16" bit hits both sides of the lumber.

Re: stud finders
If You haven't tried the MAGIC STUD FINDER products, I would recommend everyone to give it a try, it uses powerful rare earth Magnets, they call them (TARGETS) that will stick to the wall like MAGIC, once the target is attached to the wall, its a stud 4 sure, after using it, you are going to say ,How come I never thought of that :)).

Re: stud finders
Best studfinder I've ever used. I don't bother with the electric ones anymore.

Re: stud finders
This is what I use most often:

It's a convenient size and shape and the magnet is enclosed in plastic so it doesn't mark the wall.

Re: stud finders
I have the Franklin.
I also have a Bosch, Irwin Scientific, a couple of different Zircons, even a crap 'n decker ... and a few more that memory fails, at this time.
This one (the Franklin) actually works. I've had very few, if any, false readings ... which is something that I get all of the time with the others.
You don't have to find an empty spot and have it calibrate, just push the button anwhere ... in the air, against the wall, it does not matter.
My only complaint is that sometimes, the lighting shows three or four inches, as opposed to 1.5.
Other than that ... I've not had it miss a stud. When running a room for base or crown ... it is incredibly fast.
It may not be the holy grail ... but that one is close.

Re: stud finders
I have a couple of 8 plex's built in the early 70's. they have a strip if metal screwed on perpendicular to the studs, which has the sheetrock approximately 3/8" off the studs. The sheetrock is screwed to the metal horizontal strips. Do you suppose the Franklin has the capability to detect the studs, with the rock being separated from the studs by the metal?

The Fanklin was reviewed in the latest issue of Fine Homebuilding with only good things to say and no complaints. Issue #232

Re: stud finders
If it uses a rare earth magnet, keep it away from your phone.
