    Default Trash drawer kick-opener

I know I've seen a device that you can step on or kick and it throws a pullout trash drawer open. Not an electric servo-controlled unit, just a simple mechanical device. Google is not being helpful--am I imagining this gadget?

I think I've seen it, but cannot remember where. But here is another one for you. The Blum servo-drive allows you to bump the front with your knee to open.

He asked for non powered, Servo Drive are the Blum electric, the Tip On does not require power.

Yeah, I know. No power. But this is the better video about the Blum.

It may be a Rev-a-Shelf thing. I'll check.

Tom's got it. I used them on some toe kick drawers, they work real sweet, just a tap with your foot and they pop open. BTW they're really pricey.

You use the Blum Tip On on a shop fabricated carriage. If I can do it, anyone can.

Thanks guys--but I don't think we're there yet. We're going to use Blum's servo drive on another project so I know about those. On the kitchen we just finished there are three wide, pull-out trash drawers (one at each sink).

We recently hired a new shop manager and because none of my previous trash drawer designs worked well enough we tried his design. He's built about 1500 kitchens and I've only designed or built about... well, less than that. His design uses four side-mount slides, two at the top and two at the bottom. They work great, except their action, compared to the Blumotion Tandem drawers in the rest of the kitchen, is pretty stiff.

I know they will loosen up eventually, but for now the owner would benefit from a little help getting it started. I know that in some ad, somewhere I've seen what I imagined to be a cam-actuated lever that kicks the drawer open. Maybe it was just the servo drive and I missed the real mechanism....

This is the most expensive kitchen I've ever done and the owner is super nice. I feel bad that the drawers aren't working as well as they should. She is not into gadgets and she doesn't want to spend a ton of money (neither do we) so it has to be somewhat cost effective.

Does that help at all? Thanks again--

Seeing as they are side mounts (I'm guessing a KV 8414), and you have 4 of them, Remove the 2 rubber "catches" (they'll be on the carcass elemnet) on the lower ones. If it is still to stiff, spread the prongs on the upper drawer elements.

    Mike,

I used to use four slides as well but it never worked.

Simply remove the bottom ones, works great. If it's really wide (over 24"), you need to use the file drawer slides.

Good tip regarding file drawer slides, Bob. I'd still like to find a toe-operated opener, but the heavier duty slides would certainly help.

If you could start over, you would do well to consider the Rev-a-Shelf in a top-mount action with the Rev-a-Motion gas piston.

I have done top mount and bottom, and top works better.

Bin pullouts, like deep drawers heavy with contents, need some pull force to get them moving. The gas piston works both ways to help, giving it a push out when opening, and it dampens the close.

Trouble I have with any garbage pullout is that often when you want to pull one out, your hands are dirty from garbage, or full with it. That is what makes the knee-action open of the Blum servo pusher so attractive.

We spend a lot of money on kitchen gadgets for convenience. Why not spend some more on something that we need every day, that of waste handling?

Tom, you nailed it. That's exactly what I am looking for.

Walrus, I didn't know about the piston, I'll look into that too.

    Thank you both.
