Light Commercial venting requirements and suggestions
Hey all,
I've been a follower on this forum for years but this is my first time posting. I've worked for the last 15 years in residential construction and rehab work.
I'm currently doing some work for a friend that is setting up a retail and maker space for crafts and wanted to install some natural gas burners mainly to heat water for dying materials and likely some other similar uses.
The burners would be well-kept and relatively clean, but I was concerned about carbon monoxide from the combustion. The ceilings are high and the place is naturally vented, but I'm not sure what type of venting might be required or would simply be a best practice. How much carbon monoxide do simple burners produce?

I don't want to seem flippant, but it seems to me that you are literally playing with fire. Your talking about open flame burners in a public retail space. I have to believe that the local building officials and the fire department would have the answer to your questions.
Did these question not come up when you were applying for a building permit? If not, I would think that they will when you go for your certificate of occupancy.
If nothing else, think of the liability you and your friend are assuming if you don't go through the proper channels and get the proper certifications and approvals.
Also, it would be good if you could fill out your profile. Good luck.

I agree completely with Slaughter on this. The liabilities on this could literally be through the roof. I loose enough sleep over jobs from time to time and I wont touch NG !
Anyways I googed glass blowing equip / NG for glass blowing and came up with this. They might be able to answer your questions.

Steve. Where did you get the idea that he was doing glass blowing? I have reread his post and he said that the burners would be used to heat water for dying materials.
I'll admit that I'm getting a little long in to tooth, but please tell me I have not totally lost it. :>) Bruce S.

"install some natural gas burners mainly to heat water for dying materials and likely some other similar uses."
He doesn't really give detail enough to say much. What volume of water; 1-6 qts or 1-6 gallons? What frequency and time duration is needed; up to 120° or a full boil? Water only or dyestuffs too, and if the latter what type[s]? Could be venting is needed for fumes and moisture more than CO. Could be a demand HWH would work fine.Food for thought: "Man is the only animal that can remain on friendly terms with the victims he intends to eat until he eats them."

Re: Light Commercial venting requirements and suggestions
Bruce - I really need new glasses. Reading / typos have been a bit much in the last couple of months.
You're right...I just got the gas and crafts part and assoc it with glass blowing / crafts booth for the shop as a reference for NG set up.
I did see on the re-read about dying pots.
Thanks
