    Default Clamping door material

    Looking at beefing up on the clamp arsenal for building doors in the shop. I need clamps to laminate my rails and stiles together.

    I'm planning on buying (16) 4 packs of C Clamps http://www.amazon.com/4-pc-Heavy-Dut...words=c+clamps from Amazon to get started. I think that gives me enough to do a whole door at a time. (we don't do much more than 1 or 2 custom doors at a time at this point)

    Would you guys get different c clamps for that purpose or do you think those will get the job done?

    Some of our rails will be as wide as 10-12 inches so should I get some deep throat clamps to apply pressure out in the middle of the material?

    Also, do any of you guys have a glue that you prefer when gluing up doors? Maybe something with more working time? I'm skeptical of some of the stuff that sets up fast because it seems to take at least 10 minutes from the time you start gluing to the time you have everything clamped and squared up.

    One final question. Bar clamps just from the top or would you clamp from both sides of the door? In other words... would you set your door on a few bar clamps and then set some bar clamps on top of your door?

    Thanks a lot!

    How about a picture of one of your doors and how you use the clamps? My feeble mind cannot grasp how you use C-clamps to build doors.

    Titebond II Extend;

    Titebond III has a longer open time than II, not as long as II Extend.

    On the doors in this thread, with the Domino's for alignment, bar clamps across the top only.

    For wide cope and stick rails, one at top and bottom style contact points. Up to 4 clamps.

    I figured out you are using the C-clamps for build up of your rails and styles, I use bar clamps for that. With pads, can't see why the C-clamps would not work.

    Check with the AHJ, what we say doesn't matter.

    Josh,
    I think you may be laminating up your stiles and rails from 3/4 or 5/4 stock? Before you assemble them with bar clamps? I've found that Bessey's new Duo Clamps are really awesome for all of that stuff--I have some in 12" and some in 18" and some in 24"--I'm so pleased with them. They're one-handed squeeze clamps with deep jaws on one side and narrow jaws on the other. And they never slip when you're applying pressure, like less expensive quick-grip-type clamps always do eventually. And you can apply a LOT of pressure with the Duo Clamps. In one of these pictures, you'll see I made each side of the door first before clamping the stiles and rails together to make a 2 1/2" thick door for my shop. In the other I used the clamps to secure the 1 1/4" "carriage doors" panels I'd made to my roll-up door before cutting through the the carriage doors along the panel segments.

    Josh,

    If you mean "laminate"...
    You could do a lot more with a few cauls and less clamps.
