replace drill chuck
I would like to replace a chuck on a 1/2 corded drill .this chuck will not budge by conventional method -which is crank a large allen key in chuck and smack with hammer . Do you know of any tricks to remove a very stubborn chuck ?

Re: replace drill chuck
did you remove the lock screw inside the chuck, and are you smacking it counterclockwise?

Re: replace drill chuck
screw removed . allen wrench is really taking a beating . this is not the first time i have not been able to get a chuck off 1/2" drills. This one is a 4.8 amp bosch drill -that is a lot of torque to tighten that chuck with .

5/16" allen or bigger? Sometimes they are reluctant to let go.
Hang the chuck over the edge of a bench, clamping the tool. Let go with a deadblow. I have had trouble with one Bosch tool, but a smaller cordless. Set the direction of tool in forward, if hammer

Re: replace drill chuck
Put some penetrating oil, WD40 or similar and let it work it's magic overnight.
Try an impact driver if you have one or if you have a mechanic friend, stop over and use his for 2 seconds.

Re: replace drill chuck
An allan key that fits an impact gun. Chuck the key, pull the trigger on the impact, chuck will come right off.

Re: replace drill chuck
i haven't tried an impact gun . i will try an air one .they have more instant zip .i tried the hand impact tool .seemed a good idea but drill lacks enough resistance for it to work .but smacking it definitely ruined the chuck . did the oil thing in the chuck also .if the air impact fails i will be cutting it up with a grinder . The big allen key i have been using has never done anything but remove chucks in the 30 plus years i have owned it but the beating it has gotten this time mostly has taken any other value it had away .it has gotten a pounding .

Re: replace drill chuck
spray some PB Blaster in the chuck and let it sit overnight with the chuck facing up. chuck a 3/8" allen in the chuck, and give it a sharp tap counterclockwise with a hammer.

Re: replace drill chuck
hope you have aleredy solved your proble. If not, I suggest you use a long pipe wrench or one you can put a piece of pipe on to extend the handle. I hve used a 3 foot long piece of 2 inch galv over the handle o a pipe wrench and never been stopped.

Re: replace drill chuck
So got it off . The locktight in the chuck didn't help .The hand impact driver busted the jaws but failed to release the chuck .I ground the rotating part of the chuck off .I then used a stick welder to fasten a hunk of iron up close to the drill and above the threded nose . The welder was up high expanded the chuck.I then wacked on the piece I welded to the chuck and it spun off -one hit like it should of . Hope that helps someone someday
