Default The new Graco handheld paint guns

I'm trying to figure out the new Graco handheld line, as I'm trying to replace my Graco Truecoat destroyed in the fire. Their marketing people seem to have gone nuts. I thought their old lineup was confusing but I think this sets a new standard of insanity.

I believe currently on the market we have:

    Proshot
    Proshot II (cordless)
    Proshot Fine Finish
    Truecoat
    Truecoat II corded
    Truecoat II cordless
    Truecoat II Plus corded
    Truecoat II Plus cordless
Truecoat Pro II corded (part number 16N673, suggested retail $349)
Truecoat Pro II cordless (part number 16N57, suggested retail $489)

The Proshot II cordless is identical to the Truecoat Pro II cordless (except for the tips), but the Proshot models are only carried at Sherwin-Williams.

The tips are not interchangeable between the Truecoat Pro II and the Proshot II, even though the rest of the gun is the same.

The Truecoat Plus II corded and Truecoat Plus II cordless are only carried at Loews.

The new 2.0 versions of the guns ("II")have a pressure control valve. However the Proshot fine finish, which is still the old model, also has a pressure control valve. The pressure control valve on the fine finish has a range of 500 to 1500 PSI while the control valve on the version II models has a range of 1000 to 2000 PSI.

The Truecoat guns are not repairable. The Truecoat II guns are repairable.

I believe the above is accurate, but I don't guarantee it.

If anyone owns one of the new versions, I'd love to hear your experience. I need to buy something right away.

I had the old Truecoat, and although it was recommended here by a member of this forum, I was never very happy with it. There was no way to control the paint flow or pressure (it was way too fast to do any detail), and therefore there was a lot of waste. You also could not tilt the gun too far or it would lose prime. The gun was also quite heavy. Additionally, trying to screw the cup back on, especially after there was some dried paint in the threads, was maddening.

Just buy a Graco air assisted airless. A least there aren't 10000 models of them.

Other than that never used the hand held.

Check with the AHJ, what we say doesn't matter.

Very confusing indeed. I would recommend reaching out to Scott Burt at TopCoat Finishes. Unfortunately, he's left the building here at JLC but is still active on FOG. He can also be contacted through his website.

You beat me to it Joe. Scott at TopCoat has a review of that product on his website. I thought about buying one but a Rep. pointed me in another direction which I've been using the last few weeks. I will post a review one of these days or you can PM me if you want to know more.

Do you have a link? I have not been able to find the review.
What product did you choose instead?

    Scott's website is Topcoatreview.com

    http://topcoatreview.com/category/pr...dheldcordless/

He has a good review of the previous model of the Proshot, and of the fine finish, but not of the Proshot 2(That I could find). Just a little vid of it in use.

As somebody who does a lot of small jobs, where we might spray one or two doors, and a room's worth of trim prior to install, I really like the proshot, but I do wish Graco would make it simpler to tell what is what between all the models. I also wish it were possible to try out the units prior to purchase, esp as the fine finish is pricey $$$.

    Hey Guys

Just saw this...I have been running the new ProShot2 since March of this year. Have not had a chance to do a write up on it anywhere yet, but essentially, they Graco has made improvements in the following areas:

    - it now has pressure control
    - the battery has been upgraded to 20v
    - the inlet tube is multi directional for full cup usage
    - easier to lube the pump
    - instructional materials (dvd) for maintenance
    - easier to clean

So, in my mind, as a long standing user of the original and fine finish units, the PS2 is a hybrid of the two. It is built on the chassis and body of the fine finish PS, which was a bit smaller than the original ps, but still has 2000 psi (the fine finish is 1500).

I have run it with paints and clears successfully at a pretty high level.

I do still recommend this as a convenience tool, it is probably not the right sprayer for people who spray several times per week, but for occasional users it is extremely handy to have.

And please understand that this is not an hvlp unit. It is a cordless airless, so the transfer efficiencies are not nearly as good as hvlp. There is overspray.

If you have questions, please feel free to ask.

Tom is right, above, the air assisted airless is the ultimate rig. It is what we use the most. But it is an investment. It depends how much spraying you do.

Here is a up close and personal clip of the ps2 in action on verticals.

The air assisted airless will be your best choice for PRODUCTION fine finish. I dont spray Fine Finish all the time but I want high quality, versatile(all products), low overspray, and easy clean up.

My issue with "airless" type systems is that the product goes through a hose and pump....that makes for costly and time consuming clean up. Especially if your using an oil based product or lacquer undercoat.

HVLP is good choice but then theres a hefty price tag. and the clean up is still more than I like.

I will figure out how to post a video of my system. Everything has negatives but I can get the best finishes for a fraction of the cost and meet all of my requirements.

I also had a Truecoat, and didn't care for it - lots of overspray.

The following thread is a discussion on Fine Finnish with HVLP at the FOG:

Scott contributed a lot of great info in this thread. It gets rather detailed but its loaded with great system info.
