    Default Pergola to house connection

    Hello everybody,
I'm planning to build a pergola over a low profile deck. I'm not sure of the best way to connect it to the house. I have a 36" soffit. If that's relevant.
    Thanks,
    Mike

    That's not a street, it's a sidewalk.

Soffit can be relevant if it's high enough. Doesn't look like it from your drawing.

There aren't many good ways of doing this. Easiest is to design it to be self supporting. If you attach it to the soffit, you need to make sure the soffit can support it (additional load can cause problems).

I wonder if anyone has made, or had made, a bracket that goes around the gutter? The gutter is the problem part- you don't really want to take it off, although with a 3' eave, you could, probably. That leaves you with putting the soffit above or below the gutter. Hmm... Another idea would be to have a gutter made to bolt the house-side ledger to; could either be a heavy enough U-channel to carry the load, or use a deep gutter with high-low bolts run through it to the fascia. And then you've gotta make sure the fascia is attached well enough that wind load, kids climbing, etc., aren't going to pull the fascia off.

It's not a lot of load, so you could weld some C brackets that wrap under the gutter and attach to the soffit, or attach to the fascia behind the gutter.

Or you go onto the roof, with brackets that hold the ledger up far enough off the roof that it doesn't affect drainage.

I think I'm going to start making brackets for this, considering how often it comes up- both in questions online and from clients.

Las the Simpsom ABU66E works for 5" K gutters. If you must mount it to the fasica.

Code does not allow mounting a ledger board for a deck to a cantilever, to support the deck. I do not know if it applies to a pergola.

Check with the AHJ, what we say doesn't matter.

Hmm... You mount that behind the gutter, and use it to suspend the fascia for the pergola?

That's an interesting thought. Paint it out on the bottom and it would pretty much go away.

I haven't had a problem with officials with pergolas so long as they don't have a cover or something that makes them serious sails. That may change over time...

Yes, that is how I used the bracket.

I ran 5" Ledger Locks through the bracket, fascia into the rafter tail. I did have to drill the fascia to get the clearance needed to run the locks in.

With the 3' rafter tails on this project, there will be a high load at the birds mouth. Depending on rafters size and HAP is there enough strength in the rafter to carry the load? (Lavs not a question for you per se, just putting it out there.)

12" fascia, leaves room below the gutter. You'll have to figure out how to detail it.

Last one I did connected to structural framing with a Simpson WHAM used as a strut. Nails on the pergola side and bolted into the stud with a 5x5/8" lag and washer. Pergola fastened to the concrete with ABU66's routed into the RS cypress

The BEST method we've ever found is the SkyLift Hardware SK-24B, they have other stuff but this one works the best. It's secure, leak-free and give a great look, better than any other method or gizmo I've seen.

Because few people want to double up the amount of posts on their deck...
