    Default A question for turners,

    or anyone else who knows.

    I believe it was on this forum that I had read that when a turner needs a "half/split" post, they glue up a blank with a paper barrier. Do the lathe work, then split at the "paper" seam.

    I am going over in my head (lots of voices with opinions in there, but none are sure of this answer) a project where it would be easier to do a glue up then split the piece.

    There will be router work performed on the pieces.

    My questions;

    Was it paper used as the barrier?

    If so, what type of paper is best to use?

    If not paper, what then?

    What glue?

    How "tight" should I clamp the pieces.

    Tom,

    i'm not a turner but i have read om more than one occasion about what your asking and here's what "they" say:

    plain ol' newspaper with plain ol' white glue (PVA) with "normal" clampling pressrure/techniques.

    There's an old time outfit here in So Cal called Abbaroot(?), they're based in the Long Beach area. If you want definitive info i'd call them. Old equipment and old techniques all turned by hand- i've used them on occasion and they always produce a quality product.

    Thank you Mister Smith.

    Now that you mention newspaper, it jogs one of those voices in my head.

    I knew an oldtimer that used brown paper bags and Elmers glue.

    Newspaper, any yellow glue, normal clamping. Paper will split leaving newsprint on both surfaces.

    Thank you all.

    Now I have to get the rest of the voices to agree on the balance of the project.

    I've always just used news paper or brown paper and Elmer's glue. Works great.

    I appreciate the responses. I'll post some pics of what this will be when I get to it.

    How about taking a look at this and letting me know what you think;
