Winder at the top of a flight of stairs

I am having to redesign a run of stairs on a framing job. The way that the designer has drawn the stairway does not work. ( I know shocker!!) this house has a garage with a bonus room over it. The garage is at a 45 degree angle to the house. The stairs rise from the house and intersect the bonus room trusses at a 45 degree angle. the plans calls for a landing at the top of the flight of stairs and then a door. I can not build the landing because the landing will make the run of stairs too long. They will protrude proud of the stair way inclosure walls and have head room issues. I can not push the door farther into the bonus room because the head height will not allow the door to open without hitting the celling.

My question:

I know that a landing is not required at the top of a stairway with a door as long as it is not the main exit for the home. Can I make the last tread a winder? placing the doorway at a 45 degree angle to the direction of travel from the rest of the stairway?

I understand the rule to be, you do not need a landing as long as the door does not swing over the stairs. Not sure about the winder.

Look at it a different way, when you walk out the door that is the direction of travel. Why wouldn't you place the door at a 45° and use the PROPER sized winder(s) to work.

Keep in mind you cannot use the "restricted space" excuse to create habitable space in new construction!

By the way, the term bonus room only goes so far. I suggest you have the sparky add a combo smoke/co detector in the space. Smoke for fire, CO for cars left running in the garage.

Keep in mind the stairway if enclosed will alter the placement of the one hour wall(s), 5/8 X between the garage and the house and habitable space. Plan accordingly!

thanks for the response. the area is all un-finished (un sheet rocked) storage. the door will be a fire door and the garage lid I believe will be 5/8 but that is not within my scope of the job. I am just the lowly framer fixing the issues created by the designer. Well off to frame another stair-way.

I forgot that I posted this!! The inspector and his Boss both felt that there were not issues with the winder at the top of the stair way.
