No, never been questioned. Nobody's even noticed. I'm pretty small time though and I don't do a lot of kitchens anymore although I used to do a fair amount. You can still bring the doors out flush with the FF if you wanted by adjusting hinges. Its just the way I was schooled and it was before soft closers. Easy to get 7/8ths out of 4/4 stock when you're working with narrow material, so why not do it that way?
One other thing it lets you do is set the bead back from the face just a bit (rout it in a little deeper). Then when you sand the FF you're not as prone to flatten the bead.
