Default I need some help with plaster!

Hi first time posting here and I'm doing a little project on a old 1900s house I'm moving in to and some of the walls need to be fixed. I've knocked out some of the old plaster and need to start filling them in with plaster except I can only find plaster of Paris and that sets up WAY to quick as I found out. I've called the lumber yards and no one has plaster! Where do I get it at?? I looked at menards and all they have is plaster of Paris. I've read that you can not just use joint compound cuz it will just crack is that correct? Any help here is much appreciated and hiring it done is NOT an option as I don't hire anyone to do anything lol. Thanks

Check with a drywall supply yard for "Gypsolite" or "Structolite" base coat plaster. If you don't have any luck there call United States Gypsum or National Gypsum and ask for the location of the nearest supplier.

You could also look for a professional plastering contractor to assess the situation and tell you the best approach and perhaps do the job. Plaster work is certainly not impossible for a novice but there are a variety of approaches that can be taken depending on the situation and the funds available for repairs.
