    Default Beveled cedar siding

    I have a question on nailing beveled cedar siding. The siding in question is 5 1/2" and the installation calls for a 4 1/2" reveal. I had always thought you would blind nail this type of product due to the small reveal. Another carpenter on the job thought face nailing was the correct method because nailing into the thin top section only would invite splitting. This made sense to me as well.

    Is there a accepted 'correct' method. Assume the exact same nails and schedule are used for either method.

    All cedar we install is face nailed. The nail should not penetrate the top of the lower course, but be just above it.

    Yep, always face nail cedar bevel, and BTW... I would strongly recommend you always use stainless steel fasteners.

    Two things;

    I did not mention it was me on purpose.

    Do not insult the true carpenters on the forum by grouping me in with them.

    Yep this is correct. Blind nailing is a cement siding thing.

    Any siding without a grain that would allow the siding to break at the grain??

    Then again, you could always caulk all the horizontal laps on the cedar. :-)
