fien multi tool
I know that fien is supposed to the top of the line multi tool. However what always kept me buying on in the past has always been the price of blades. Is it me or has the price of blades dropped a lot? I thought I used to remember seeing single blades for $25 each, now I am seeing them for more like $10 each. Am I just not remembering things right?
Yes I know about Al but I started out with a cheap Havard Freight one and it finally seems to be about ready to give up the ghost. Kind of thinking about an upgrade but at the same time I am thinking 2 or 3 years out of a $29 tool is pretty hard to beat. I will be the first to admit that once I got one I found more ways to use it than I had thought.

Re: fien multi tool
Beezo,
I think I have seen a slight decrease in blade cost as well. I'll tell you this though, I bought a Dremel multi tool about a year ago because it was on sale at HD and I just wanted to try it out. When it craps out or sooner even I will be getting the fien without another thought. For something I use for so many things and so often price is almost not even a consideration. Just get the best. If all the multi tools cost $500 I'm still buying one. It just does that much for me.
I have an adapter for my Dremel so that I can use any brand multi tool blade I'm sure it could be used the other way around but I've found my blades last a while (as long as I dont hit nails or screws)so I just buy whatever is available when needed. I usually put a few bucks into every bid for a new blade of some sort as well.
I'd imagine you have the multi tool out at least once a week so just bite the bullet and treat yourself.Darrel Hunter

Re: fien multi tool
I have the fien. I buy my blades from Menards. They have blades that fit that are made for a knock off version but cut just fine. I pay about $16 for three blades. They are the green ones that are bi-metal. I had been paying about $32 per blade from fien when they had the market cornered. Now I go out of my way to not purchase their consumables after they screwed evryone on pricing for so long. But, it is a much more durable tool than the $100 knock offs.
there is ALWAYS a better way waiting to be discovered-

Tools of the Trade did a review recently.

I have the Fein but would consider the Bosch next time around. Their blades get consistently good reviews and are available in more places than Fein.

I have the Fein and really like it. It's a quality tool no doubt. Beez, I'd be surprised if the junk multi-tool will cut like the Fein. It's also a great detail sander. What seperates the Fein from other brands is the blade change mechanism. it's very fast and rock solid. Bosch sells an adapter you put on the Fein so you can use the Bosch blades which are sold at HD and work well.

I have the Fein SuperCut and after the first use I forgot how much I paid for it. Hands down a superior tool. I have a large assortment of Imperial blades that are of excellent quality and just purchased 12 blades from Multiblades.com (Al), and although I haven't used them to date they appear to be of the highest quality.

Re: fien multi tool
Multiblades.com seems to be constantly improving their blades, whether in little things like labeling, or bigger things like the strength of weld.
I had a couple of blades break a while ago. The next batch I got was visibly stronger, and since then the blades take whatever beating I give them.
Just did a lot of work cutting back mahogany. Was expecting to have to use 2 blades. One did just fine.
Now that Fein's patent has expired, there are a number of sources for blades. I wouldn't let the cost of blades get in the way of getting one.
Of course, I know your argument about the $29 Harbor freight tool. Kind of like getting a few Escorts for the price of a BMW. I guess it's all in the quality of the ride that suits you.Last edited by S.Joisey; 09-18-2012 at 06:02 PM.

It took me awhile to get a Fein, but once you have one, you'll wonder how you lived without it...especially if you do remodeling.

resharpen your own blade. I use a dremal rotary tool with a cutoff wheel. I make the teeth deeper and wider than factory. It takes about a minute and I have not purchased a new blade in over a year. It will cut better than new and you do not need to worry about ruining a good blade. Also with this technique you can shape your on blades to get into tighth places.

Re: fien multi tool
Anyone ever work on their MM?
Mine has been intermittently losing power lately. I opened it up and cleaned off the contacts (it acted like a loose neutral) and it worked better for a bit but the problem has returned. I might try to replace the variable speed unit next.
Sorry for the thread hijack.

Re: fien multi tool
The fien is worth every penny hands down. My plumber has the harbor freight and he will come get my fien if he has a lot of cutting in cabs, baseboard ect.
