need a new wheelbarrow
Guys, I need to get a new wheelbarrow which is a tool I use about 3 times a year. It often gets taken to a job and is left outside for a week or so then brought home. If I have not just tossed tools and materials from a previous job into the garage it gets stored inside. About half the time it does not. I know it is a tool and not a fine tool but I still hate to just waste money on them.
Looking for recommendations as to body-metal or plastic
one wheel or two wheel, sizes as in 4 to 6 cu ft., even brands if one seems better than another.
My main use is things like hauling dirt, getting the 10 bags of concrete around the house for deck piers, then mixing the concrete in it, mulch at my house, some times jobsite debris.

Re: need a new wheelbarrow
I second the Jackson. Look around most commercial job sites and you will most likely see the Jacksons. I have had one that has lived outside for a decade and it is fine.

My jackson was used when I got it in 1996 stays outside year round and is still going strong. The one thing I did do is paint the wood.

Another vote for the solid rubber tire here. Nothing like having to air up the tire every time you go to use it, after 3 mo. of non-use. I have one I bought at hd about 5 years ago, not heavy duty but gets the job done. I use mine about as frequently as you for the same uses.

Like others have said, Jackson. They'll cost you a bit more up front but it's well worth it because it will last much longer and work better than any others. They take a beating and just keep going.

Re: need a new wheelbarrow
The first wheelbarrow I bought was in 1972 and cost around $75.00 which was just short of a week's wages. I mixed by hand all my mortar for about 2000 10 inch blocks and thoroughly scrubbed it out after each batch to prevent ruining it. On hot days I used to fill it up with water and lay in it. 28 years later I gave it away because I was moving out west and it had just developed holes in the bottom. It was an all steel frame with long steel handles. I actually don't ever remember getting a flat tire.
A few years ago I went shopping for another one and I wanted the best I could get and I didn't care about the price. It seems that where I am I couldn't readily get long steel handles or even long wooden handles for that matter. The steel body seems a lot softer because I have more dents than my old one ever had. I did upgrade to a better quality air tire because I remember in my younger days having to 'ride' over obstacles and wanted the flexing ability of an air tire.
So, after about 3 years the tire has never gone flat but the wheelbarrow in general doesn't hold a candle to my first love;)

Re: need a new wheelbarrow
For very occasional use you may not need one as good as Jackson, but it may not take as much abuse.
I had bought a plastic bucket one from HD, light weight and worked very well for occasional use. Until a laborer dropped a big sharp rock in it and cracked the plastic bucket.

The Jackson with rubber filled tire is 99.00 at box stores and its assembled. Greg Burnet posted a sale on these a few years ago for 49.00 with free shipping. I bought 6,got 4 for friends. UPS guy was a little put out.

Re: need a new wheelbarrow
jackson was what I was leaning towards and you guys confirmed it. Will get it today and try it out around the house on some dirt and yard waste. Big job will be a bit later when we remove about 20 ft of concrete sidewalk along side a driveway that is asphalt. We are afraid of driving any equipment on it since it is not in great shape.
Thanks.

Re: need a new wheelbarrow
If you get a Jackson, don't be afraid to get the plastic one. I have it and it has been a work horse for years (very thick high quality plastic)

Re: need a new wheelbarrow
I bought this one with the pour spout a few years ago for $80 at Lowes and have been pleased. I only use it three or four times a year for mixing concrete and pouring footings, but that's where it's really handy.
