Searching For Partition System Without Hollow Sound
I'm seeking a partitioning system (for luxury villas project) that eliminates the need for plastering. And at the same time I don't want the hollow sound produced by Drywalls when you tap/knock on them. The challenges are as follows:
1) use sandwich panels => but the problem is that I find the systems not very accurate in dimensions resulting to poor finish quality or the need for plastering... both are not acceptable.
2) use drywall panels fixed on studs and runners => this is the best solution except that I can't find ones that doesn't produce hollow-sound upon knocking/tapping on them. Would adding a soundboard eliminate the hollow sound? If so, what sizes, type and method to be uses?
Can anybody help?
Thanks in advance.

Would insulating the wall cavities eliminate the hollow sound problem?
It is a simple matter of being patient. I do patience very well, except for the waiting part. That's the one aspect of patience that still bites me.

Re: Searching For Partition System Without Hollow Sound
Insulation might be the right approach... possibly dense pack cellulose.
More info is needed. What thickness of drywall are you using? What is the framing... i.e. what size members and what spacing?
Soundboard might make some improvement, but I think what you need is more mass (thicker drywall, another layer of drywall) and/or tighter spacing (more framing with less space between pieces).

Re: Searching For Partition System Without Hollow Sound
Thank you for your responses. In answer to your questions, please note the following:
1) These walls are for internal partitioning (Non-Bearing Walls) up to 3.2 m high to be used in luxury villas project.
2) Thicknesses of these walls (with the cavity) are mostly 15 cm but in some cases 20 cm.
3) No limitation here to the type or thickness of drywall to be used as long the HOLLOW tapping noise gets eliminated and the finish doesn't require PLASTERING.
4) No limitation here to the type or size of the studs and runners.
5) Oh one last thing, the drywall must be able to hold a LED TV screen anywhere without the need for backing reinforcement.
The best solution would seem to use Sandwich panels. But unfortunately we couldn't find sandwich panels that has low tolerance in thickness to accept putty/paint directly without plastering.
I look forward for your help... and thanks again in advance.

Fabricate your panels, inject with foam. Panels are no longer hollow. Resonance is eliminated.

Re: Searching For Partition System Without Hollow Sound
check out companies like Ultrawall http://www.ultrawall.com/ and Partioning Systems http://www.partitions.com/
It's been about 30 years since I worked with these types of systems but even then they had wide range of systems, some that needed taping and finishing and some that don't, finishes in everything from vinyl to matched wood veneers and STC ratings that allow confidential meetings in offices, sound studios..... .
There are many players in that end of the business and no doubt they've only gotten better in the last 30 years

The best solution would be using Knauf Insulation. Knauf Insulation will provide products for a range of partition system. Sound Insulation is the prevention of noise being transmitted from one building to another.

Re: Searching For Partition System Without Hollow Sound
How much tapping does one do on drywall for that to be an issue? You want a solid wall then use the I stud (steel) and shaft wall assembly.
