Sticky Flashing
HEY JLC!
How about an article on the different choices of self adhesive flexible flashings for windows?
70% of my business is replacing windows. Note: we specialize in replacing the entire window frame, i.e. pulling old frame and installing new frame, patching or replacing siding/stucco as needed. We don't do breakouts, period! (Excepting masonry openings)
Anyway, some people claim that you have to know when to use asphalt based flashing tape, versus the other kind, cause asphalt based can melt nail fins on certain brands of windows. (Like Marvin, or so I'm told)
I read an article put out by Vycor that claims this is a bunch of hooey, and you can use vycor on any brand of window nail fin, without fear of chemical incompatibility.
Who to believe? I don't know, that's why JLC should do an article on this.
Please.
Flexible flashing manufacturers that I know of are as follows.
Vycor, Dupont, Fortiflash, Windowwrap, Protecto Wrap and ProtectoWrap super stick, OSI, Pella Tape, 3M.
I'm sure there's more, so break it down for us JLC.
I want an analysis of compatibilities with the major window companies.
Specifically: Marvin, Pella, Andersen, Milgard, Atrium, Weathershield, Integrity, Kolbe & Kolbe, Hurd, Jeld-wen, etc.
Another aspect of which to use would be what are we sticking it to?
OSB, CDX, Zipwall, Asphalt Impregnated Sheathing? (I hate that stuff!)
Foam, Foil Faced Foam Board?
Does it matter?
And when you finish that article, you can start on the article about prefab sill pans for doors. Astro plastics, Jamsill etc.
Thanks,
-

Re: Sticky Flashing
I'd read that.
It'd be cool to see a graph with all the windows on one axis and all the p&s on the other, with conflicts checked off.
Then there's the sealants, of course...

Re: Sticky Flashing
The above is a bit dated, but not a whole lot has changed in terms of materials playing well together. Still a good primer on the basics.

Re: Sticky Flashing
This is a great idea. I'd read it and print it and laminate it. Maybe Martin'll do an update. That would be great. Either here or at GBA.

Re: Sticky Flashing
That's the kind of article I was hoping for. An updated version would be nice.
Thanks,

Re: Sticky Flashing
yes , confusing amount of info .my rule was to stick with one brand but last job i found that i had somehow ended up with two brands .Use only this caulk with this one or anything but.. with the other brand .
i like the idea of laminating a copy for my truck .

Re: Sticky Flashing
For a while Fortifiber was the only one out there that had a complete in house system that was all compatible but just saw another one at a show recently (can't remember who because I'd never heard of them and was skeptical).
