Bathroom remodel and vanity cabinet
Just finished a small bath remodel. New beadboard wainscot ( 1x6 t&g - not sheets) New base, casing and wainscot cap and a new vanity cabinet.
I usually buy cabinets from my cabinet supplier. On this project, I was inspired by Kreg, and built the vanity myself ( think I made minimum wage by the time I was done - a labor of love for sure) but it came out "real nice". Did all the raised panel doors/drawers myself. Painted with Benjamin Moore Advance waterborne Alkyd. Nice paint, but takes a long time to dry. Sorry the pictures are not great, the bathroom is tiny, and I was up against the wall ( literally) when I took the pics.

Great job Mike! Like Kent mentioned, the next should go quicker so you'll make a hair more than minimum wage :)
I have made many doors & drawer fronts and have weighed out the advantages of ordering vs making them. If I have the time and nothing better to do, I'll make them but ordering them far outweighs cost at the end of the day! Perhaps just a thought to possibly save you some cost!

Looks nice, but I hope you can stand a small criticism: One of my pet peeves is raised panels where the "field" (the flat spot in the center) is smaller than the bevel. Since these were custom, you could have changed the bevel angle and got a larger field. Would look better IMHO.

Re: Bathroom remodel and vanity cabinet
Thanks for the positive feedback guys.
Yeah, I wasn't crazy about this either. I was constrained by my raised panel bit. I guess I could have raised the panels on the TS. I wouldn't normally build a cabinet with such tiny drawers, but the customer wanted as much drawer storage as they could get in a 34" x 18" vanity. I did downsize the rails on the upper drawers so I would at least have some flat. I probably should have made them all smaller which would have helped. If I didn't have so many to do, I would have raised the panels with a rabbet plane so I could make them however I wanted to.A person that works with his hands is a laborer.

Nice job Mike. Though you didn't make much money on it, it was still a good experience.
Iv'e had good experience with Muralo waterborne gloss paint. They were one of the first using that technology. It flowed on nice, doesn't yellow, dries quickly and remains flxible so it can take a knock without chipping. Have not tried the newer waterborne paints.Bruce B.

Rollouts and multiple drawers behind one face.
The vanity with the rollouts is 26" wide.

Re: Bathroom remodel and vanity cabinet
Mike, nice work! I've designed and/or built hundreds of cabinet doors, and on our current job we ended up with the same drawer panel problem, so don't feel bad. (At the last minute we changed from the panel detail I had drawn.)
If you're a systems-minded guy you'll find the next one will go much faster.
We are using Advance for all the trim on the same job, and I'm impressed with the results. Muralo is fine but the Advance seems to flow out better, almost like our old favorite, oil-based Satin Impervo.

Very clever Tom! That is the most storage I've ever seen in a vanity that small.

Thanks Mike.
Forgot one other area------drawer(s) in the toe kick.
I have to get to work. I'll posts some pics of that tonight or tomorrow.

Re: Bathroom remodel and vanity cabinet
Looks great, but with drawers that short I usually use a slab vs. raised panel.

Lamar,
At first I though the same thing, but then I realized the drawers were oversized--especially the top drawers, and after that, I decided I liked the pointy panels. It has a real Victorian kind of look, but very symmetrical.

Re: Bathroom remodel and vanity cabinet
Your right Gary, I don't think they look bad. Kinda tricky cutting the panel if using a router with that thin of a flat to balance the panel on.
I can't tell for sure if the rails are a little undersized to accommodate the panel, they look a little narrower. Perhaps a little more and the panel could be the same as the rest.
Over all it looks SO much better then grabbing one off the shelf at the big box store.Lamar

Re: Bathroom remodel and vanity cabinet
It was tricky. I ended up building a push block out of plywood with a stop on the bottom to keep it from tipping. Then I screwed through the push block into the back of the panel. For a handle, I used a transport handle off of a French door unit. A lot of the nicer doors that I set come with these handles and they work really well as fixture handles.
The rails on the top row of drawers are 1-1/4, all other stiles and rails are 2".Last edited by FramerTK; 05-26-2012 at 12:54 PM.
