Festool Sys1 parts box nightmare
So I gave up on my plan to use Sortimo for my parts organization, since there seems to be no product available, and decided to base it around the Sys 1 Systainer parts boxes. I ordered 3 Sys 1 Systainers. Since they come with an assortment of plastic insert boxes, most of which are too big for my needs, I ordered a bunch of extra red and yellow insert boxes.
This morning I found that the extra insert boxes are slightly different sizes than the ones that come with the Systainer. Nothing fits. I've got 3 expensive Systainers, a small mountain of useless insert boxes cluttering up the shop, and zero progress on getting stuff organized.
Any idea what is going on with this stuff? I can only assume Festool changed the sizes of the boxes at some point, and didn't document anything. I checked the Festool web site and am not able to find answers.
Part numbers:
Sys 1 Systainer- 497694
Red insert boxes- 487657
Yellow insert boxes- 487658"If you only have a hammer, all problems look like nails"

Re: Festool Sys1 parts box nightmare
I have read that the inside of the T-lock is a different dimension.
Shane Holland of Festool USA is a member here. He will most likely see this. I'll be back with his screen name.

Re: Festool Sys1 parts box nightmare
Just to clarify
You said you ordered Systainer Sys 1 with extra boxes that don't fit in them but isn't that a T-lock in picture ???SteveC

Re: Festool Sys1 parts box nightmare
Yes, the Sys 1 boxes I got have T-locks. They come filled with insert boxes that fit fine. But the extra insert boxes don't fit.
I need more of the smaller insert boxes (yellow and red), and less of the larger insert boxes."If you only have a hammer, all problems look like nails"

The Festool USA site shows the SYS number needed as 487 552.

Re: Festool Sys1 parts box nightmare
Just return the boxes to where you got them and have them send you the right ones. The T-loc parts box is a better design anyways but you do loose some space from the older ones. I have also made some half lap grids of masonite in the green boxes to divide them up, mostly because I am too lazy to order more yellow boxes.
I personally find the red ones to be too small, but it all depends on what you are storing.

Re: Festool Sys1 parts box nightmare
Thanks for your help guys.
Per Shane Holland's post in the thread linked above, the part numbers for inserts for the T-lock Sys 1 boxes are:
Red 498038
Yellow 498039
Blue 498040
Green 498041
The ones I ordered were apparently the part numbers for the old-style systainer SYS 1 without the T-lock.
I think it really sucks that Festool doesn't clearly differentiate what boxes are needed on their web site. In fact if you go to the Festool web site and type in the new part numbers in the search box, nothing comes up, so the new parts are not even on Festool's web site. So how would anyone even know they exist?
The new part numbers do not come up on a search of Amazon or McFeelys, either.Last edited by hdrider_chgo; 03-18-2012 at 08:57 AM.

Re: Festool Sys1 parts box nightmare
Kent, I bought them from Amazon.
The thing is they were bought in a couple of orders, and fulfilled by a couple of vendors (for whatever reason Amazon does this). And of course over the course of last week, I threw out all the shipping cartons. I put everything on a nice pile in the shop ready to sort and organize this weekend.
BTW, as long as I'm ranting anyway, one of the vendors that Amazon has been using lately to fulfill Festool orders is Hartville Tool. It seems to take these guys a week to get the order out, and then they ship by USPS, which can take another several days, and can't be traced en route. I'm on Amazon prime, and normally get free shipping and everything delivered within two days of placing the order. (Or if I need it fast, I can pay $3.99 for overnight and in some cases even same-day delivery.)
I'm going to avoid buying anything fulfilled by Hartville in the future.Last edited by hdrider_chgo; 03-18-2012 at 09:26 AM.

I'd give Festool a call about your displeasure with the confusion.
If you post them over at FOG I'm sure they'll get gone.SteveC

Re: Festool Sys1 parts box nightmare
I agree that you have to be a bit careful ordering on Amazon. Sometimes when you click on an item it's not being sold through Amazon, but some other vendor. But, if you click on the "23 new and used from $xx.xx", you can often find Amazon as one of the options. Sometimes it's cheaper when you consider Amazon Prime.
