Default Removing wall tile buried beneath countertop

    Hi everyone!

We'd like to keep our existing countertop tile (will be re-grouting it), but we want to replace the backsplash tile. We have a tricky situation that you can see in the picture.

Originally the countertops were shorter, and at that time the wall tile was mounted. Then the countertops were raised, leaving the wall tile. And so the lower half of each full tile is beneath countertop level and we need a good way to remove the top part of the tile without damaging any countertop tile.

We've tried hand-scribing with a carbide tipped tool, but it doesn't leave a clean break and in fact really seems to stress the whole wall and countertop. I've read up on oscillating tools and from what I've seen I think one with a diamond blade might be the way to go. However, I don't know if it would risk scratching or damaging the existing countertop.

Can anyone make some recommendations on this situation?

    Thanks!

I would try a Multimaster with a diamond blade.

Tear it all out and redo the entire thing. The tops don't look worth saving. Plus you're not likely to remove the old stuff without damaging the top 'cause it's a tile-over.

Hire cheap labor and remove everything!! It will not be as strong if you just cover it with tiles.

A grinder or cutoff tool with a diamond blade is what I would probably use.

I like this idea! However, we don't want to lose too much countertop space.

Could I still tile over without mounting cement backerboard first? If so, what prep would you recommend for the tile and would you suggest a special adhesive?

    Thanks...

Mark G gave you the only course of action.

I recommend baking corn cakes and use any left over batter for your adhesive.
