Re: Bummer, dude.
As much as I like cordless tools I think cordless grinders should require a permit.

Re: Bummer, dude.
Actually that looks more like a cordless reciprocating saw. Even worse, quieter than a grinder.
How much do you suppose an old catalytic converter goes for as scrap?
Sucks in any case.

Re: Bummer, dude.
I've heard they go for around $200 out here. I guess the Ca. ones have more rhodium and/or platinum, or something. Dealer priced a Toyota replacement at $660 (for just the CC). Muffler shop priced (tentatively, over the phone) an aftermarket (but CA legal, apparently) one for $392 installed (including the welding). I've been warned that the aftermarket ones may not pass smog, though.
This is on my old 1986 1-ton. They didn't touch my 2007 Tundra parked right in front of it.Last edited by kfc510; 04-20-2011 at 05:23 PM.

Desperate times an foolish choices. Glad they didn't steal the whole truck.

Re: Bummer, dude.
They may have killed it anyway. I need to think about my options here- if the repairs are gonna push a grand, I might not bother. The truck is pretty beat up.
At the same time, it's still a great vehicle, and I don't really have anything to fill its role. Man, it's been a great truck. At 25 years old, it still carries a ton, gets great mpg, never needs repairs. If the aftermarket C.C. is viable, I'll keep it going for a while more.

Re: Bummer, dude.
kfc,
I meant that it sits pretty low for a 1 ton. My buddy has a toyota like that with air bags making it a 1 ton, but I didn't think stock little ones were that capacity.
Nevertheless, the incident is a bummer, sorry you're dealing with it.Portland Renovations, Inc.

Re: Bummer, dude.
Oh, I thought you were telling me I should pimp it out to be a low rider, maybe with hydraulics, so I could drop it all the way down onto the street and keep the bastids from getting under there.
It's an '86, stock. Great truck. I've had 1900# in it recently, actually had 2400# in it about 3 years back...

Re: Bummer, dude.
No comprehensive coverage?
It takes all of a minute to remove a cc. (Of course, they charge by the Mechanics's flat rate book, which gives them an hour.)
Airbags are another high-value item, though that risks encounters with alarm systems. And sometimes death for anyone so bold as to interfere with the industrious thieves on their appointed rounds."there is no good war, and no bad peace."

Re: Bummer, dude.
On a 25 year old truck I bought for $1500 9 years ago? No, no comprehensive.
And, yeah, I believe the minute or less to get it out of there. Two cuts through muffler pipe with a battery powered sawzall and away we go... I asked the guys at the muffler shop what can be done to deter theft of the replacement, and they (seriously) said to "keep it looking new". They told me to bring it back every 6 months and they'll put it on the lift for a few minutes and spray paint it with silver paint (for free). They didn't actually know why that makes a difference, just that it does. I guess it's harder to fence/scrap a new C.C.
They went for the '86 and left the '07 untouched (although that might also be b/c the '86 is easier to slide under...)
