    Default Favorite New iPad App

Carbonite Access. It's a free companion app for those who subscribe to Carbonite. I was in Arizona a couple of weeks ago where 'getting away' was merely a figure of speech. Took iPad along instead of laptop because I needed to reference contract documents for a final value engineering teleconference. No laptop, no physical job files - no problem. Everything at my fingertips, thanks to Carbonite Access. How long before laptops follow desktops into the dust bin of technology?

Richie, you should of looked me up! :)

Anyhow, I heard that Goto my pc.com also has a new ipad app where you can access your PC desktop from your ipad. Im wondering if the Apple bluetooth keyboard will provide somewhat of a windows experience using the keyboard and that app.

I had the carbonite app for the iphone and Im glad to see they finally made it for the ipad.

I would have but I thought you weren't in the Phoenix metro area. Where are you specifically? You can PM if you want. Contrary to a lot of people who post here I love Arizona in general - including Phoenix and Tucson. Just not mid-May through September.

Rick - what do you do when you get back to your main computer (the one Carbonite is backing up)? How did you replace those docs with the ones you were working off in Carbonite?

'Save As' version whatever and email documents to myself from the iPad. Either from the meeting or back at the office. I can even wire up and transfer with the iPad USB cable if'n I want to go retro.

I have that app as well, I use that now as opposed to Dropbox. I have it on my Droid as well and both work very good.

I just bought one last night for the iPad called Informant HD. Its basically a calendar/ todo list on steroids that syncs with Google Calender.

Forget that. You have to pay Gotomypc $10 bucks a month for their service.

If you want a good RDP client grab "Jump", it's better then gotomypc and there's no monthly charge.

    Dennis,
Do you happen to know if using the keyboard with the iPad if it gives you a "Windows like" experience with the RDP?

I dl'd a remote desktop client that a rarely use for CHS, my server based accounting program and there is so many hand jestures to learn using the ipad input screen that it's really a pain.

it has a pull down tab at the top for the keyboard, it looks just like the standard ipad keyboard except it's semi transparent. I use it a lot and I haven't had a single issue with it.

I can connect to windows server 2008 in the office, my windows 7 machine at home, or even my HTPC in my living room from anywhere. I love the mouse cursor, it's a circle for your finger and it has an arrow sticking out of the top of it, that way you can be accurate and see exactly what your clicking without your finger getting in the way.

    2 thumbs up.

Citrix' platform is the gold standard - GoToMyPC/ GoToMeeting etc. is one of those categories where I haven't found a free alternative that is truly "just as good". Many that are "good enough" - depending on your needs. . It depends on how much you use it and how critical it is to you.

    DancingD - PMFJI

These cloud services for the most part have it figured out pretty well. Carbonite (and all of those kinds of services as far as I know) use a date-time stamp to figure out what was last-in first-out etc. Then.. the better services use a system of incrementing the version so in the off-chance two people would happen to upload 2 different versions at exactly the same time... you'd just end up with one being a "previous version" and wouldn't really lose any work. The catch though is you sometimes have to turn that on - it burns up more storage space so be careful. If you're apt to be editing documents from different locations, if the service you're using has automatic versioning - make sure you have it enabled.

The really advanced document management systems (and I could be wrong about this - but I don't think Carbonite has this feature yet ) uses a check-in check-out system so only one version can ever be edited... the others would open read-only and force the user to save it with a different filename. SharePoint has this - but again, you have to turn it on.
