  • Complaints on 8 hour class

I've just been certified as a principle instructor and wanted to get any opinions about how to do the class better.

    1. What were the biggest complaints you had about the way your class was done?

    2. Would you have preferred to do an online class? 5 hours would be done in the comfort of your home. Start, stop and continue any time you want. 3 hours would be at a physical location for the hands on part.

    3. Would you have liked it better, being on Saturday or during the work week?

    any other suggestions?

Yes, an on-line class is preferred.

98% of the class could be taught and tested from the pamphlet. The 2% of hands on was, frankly, insulting to have to do.

        Thanks Beach

Greg, I get your point. However, the choice is an 8 hour class or a 5 hour online + 3 hour hands on. The hands on will still be pretty insulting, but they have rules to follow.

I'm personally going to add in D-Lead, paint chip sampling and probably do the hands on at a home to be more realistic.

As an employee, I liked getting paid for the full 8 hours. However, I have to say it would be more beneficial to do the class part on-line due to being able to study at your own pace.

The hands on time should include a Q&A time as well, to go over anything you didn't fully understand on-line.

            Thanks Tom,

The hands on is around 1 1/2 hours, so there would be time for Q&A, review for the test and the test.

People who can't figure something out. Yes- you have to clean it. Yes, you have to clean it well. Yes, you do have to clean up after yourself. No you can't track it out into the rest of the house- that's not being clean. If you're making a dust cloud that goes out the window, you're still making a mess. Got it? No? Why not? Because you still can't figure out that you've got to clean up the work site? Really?

Can those people just be shuffled out the door rather than forcing everyone listen to them?

Hours is a stupid way to set up a test. Some people are slooooow. Why should I have to sit through an hour of something when I can learn it and know it in 5 minutes?

Give a fast-forward option with a more comprehensive test after. Really. I don't need to see you put on a Tyvek suit to know that you put on a Tyvek suit.

              3. Would you have liked it better, being on Saturday or during the work week?
Weekends should be a mandatory option. You're just an education provider. The reason people are taking the class is to be able to work. Eating up a weekday means, for an owner, eating up the fee plus the productivity and the profits that might have been done that day.

              any other suggestions?
Yeah- how about just allowing people to take a more comprehensive test instead of forcing them to sit through that time waster? If I can pass a more difficult test, doesn't that essentially prove that I've spent the same amount of brain power on the info as that guy who can't get around the idea that you can throw that bag of lead in the regular garbage.

                Dean,
I thought 8 hours was about right and weekdays were ok with me. I've made decent money by being a CR. maybe pointing out the profitability of being a CR would go a long way in a class. A good looking assistant in heels wouldn't hurt either

My next class will be for the sampling technician, do you know how long that class would be?

                  Lavrans,

yep, I wish I could change up the whole format. Unfortunately, the don't give the instructor much lead way.

                  Andrew,

The sampling technician course is 8 hours too. Make sure that a Dust Sampling Technician can operate in VA. Not all States allow them. I won't teach the dust sampling, since Texas doesn't allow them.

Re: Complaints on 8 hour class

I took the class almost a year ago so I am hoping that our instructor has learned a few things. But here is what I would suggest.

As a teacher you have to be a strong person and control the room. The ones who are complaining that the law is stupid, they should not have to participate or be one of the ones who abides by the rules need to be put in their place. The time to complain about the rule is over, get over it and pay attention. Again, it might have been the timing or the group or the teacher but the ones who wanted to debate the rules, complain, etc, took up a lot of time and caused disrubtion.

As someone else said, escort them out the room.

Keep the personal stories to a minimum. I do not really need to hear too many of them.

Question and answer time should be optional and at the end of the day. You do get a big old book that you ought to be able to look up things in if you want to clarify something.

Great idea Beezo. That way those that want to can leave, and others can receive additional clarification.

                        1. Incompetent instructor(s).

                        2. No

                        3. Both should be available.

I would have liked more hands on in my class. My instructor was not so hot - made it clear that he thought the law was stupid, the class was largely on how to make money from it and meet the bare minimum.

I think a mock up showing some techniques for setting up a containment and how to clean up would have been helpful.

Some discussion of what is and is not required would help too.

And of course an instructor who keeps his/her opinions about the law quiet.

One of the things I would of like to see in hind site would of been more review on RRP compared to HUD rules , seeing how they liked to put more or less trick questions in the test on that.

Class time compared to on-line I think it all depends on the person. I think when I do the dust sampling class that I will download the student hand book first and go though it then do the class just so the information is fresher in my mind. For me it is a lot of information to take in in such a short time.

For people that complain about the hands on, It is just like a driving test or anything else , it does not matter how well you think you can do it you still have to do the field or hands on to show that you do indeed understand the process.
