Vinyl Windows
Anderson is now making vinyl windows. They're called Silverline (or Silver Line maybe).
Anyone have any experience with them?
Or possibly a recommendation of a vinyl window you've used and are happy with?
I have a spec on the plans for Superseal, but I have no reason to believe that window is the best choice.
Thanks in advance!

Re: Vinyl Windows
Tom, Looks like SilverLine is a company that Anderson bought out in order to have vinyl windows. When looking up the specs on the window they don't sound like bad windows, but until you have one in front of you who knows. For most all of my replacement windows I use a local company that uses a national system. Nice windows ,heavy vinyl frames thicker glass then most, and the most important is excellent service and turn around. Also looks like these come in white and biege only which seems to be standard for vinyl anymore. I might ask the local yard here about SilverLine just to know more about them.

Re: Vinyl Windows
I installed a Silverline a couple of years ago - not a bad window. Customer bought it & had it delivered by the local yard. A few months after install the seal failed and the window fogged. The rep from the yard came out and looked and then the Andersen/Silverline rep came out and looked. Silverline sent their own guys and replaced it, no charge.
In the northeast we have Harvey, I've used a them a number of times. The windows are decent quality and the price point is reasonable. They've held up in a number of rental units which is not easy.

Re: Vinyl Windows
My local H4H chapter has used Silverline for years. No complaints. They've been around for a long time. I think they are decent windows. I think Harvey is a decent window also, and comparably priced.

Silverline for a middle of the road vinyl does what it's intended to do. not a bad window.
If we have stock white vinyl specced we always lean twords Simonton. Good quality and service and the price point is good. www.simontonwindows.com
Jeldwen vinyl units are good too. Never had the opportunity to install a harvey though.JASON

Re: Vinyl Windows
Just did two today. One from the inside and one from the outside. Someone had talked about installing them all from the outsid because of the lead paint issue. Here every window I have ever taken apart has the outside stop as part of the window frame. If you do it from the inside you remove the center stop and use the outside stop to keep the window in place. The one from the outside we used a chisel to cut the outside stop off which is kind of a wood butcher way to do it.

Re: Vinyl Windows
I've installed many Harvey replacement windows and a couple of their new construction vinyl windows. I think they are a good window for the price (and material).

Re: Vinyl Windows
Beez- Installing from the outside - are you adding any stop material or just capping the frame with coil that places a fin / return on the vinyl frame or both? I suppose when you install this way it has to be capped - yes ?
Here they're starting to install a lot more from the outside and on all RRP jobs. They tape off the interior window with plastic creating a bag below the stool to catch debris, chisel out the stop as you said, I believe they add some ripped stop to the outside but it gets capped. Not suitable to leave that exposed as its just an add on to the chiseled stop.

Re: Vinyl Windows
I typically use Metal Industries or Ideal. I have been happy with both as they are mid-level vinyls and thats what I am expecting. All my installs are from the inside. Silver Line is available where I am also, but I have never been impressed with anything Andersen as I feel your paying more for the name, so I never really looked into the Silver Line.

I'll second,or third now I guess for Harvey. The corners are welded and they seem pretty rugged...for apartments and such.

Re: Vinyl Windows
When I install from the outside, and this is maybe the 3rd or 4th one I have done, I make some sort of outside stop and add it to the window sash to replace what I took out. I have just a bit of an aversion to thinking that 6 screws into sometimes questionable wood frames is really a good way to install a window. The one that I seem to always wonder about is the one where the sash pocket window is located. Usually those are held in with only a couple of small nails and I seem to often have a screw that wants to be placed right where the sash pocket is. I have had them pull loose from the frame and just be kind of hanging there.
After the new window is installed we almost always cap the trim. I really do not know why you would install a window that you don't have to paint and then want to paint the brick mold around the window. I know that several guys have talked about bad wood under the coil stock but I have not seen it in my work but then again I am not taking my work apart and checking it 10 years later.
