  • Graco Proshot cordless airless

It's not often that a new finish tool technology comes along that is geared to the professional (not diy) and is worth laying out some money for. I know a lot of you guys have shops, do milling, and shoot finishes. This isn't particularly a cabinet grade tool, it's more of a convenience tool, but most of us can appreciate that.

Thought you might find this interesting.

Graco proshot review is on page 12:

I was looking at those, but unless the battery is compatible to some other tool line I have I would buy the corded model. Sad to say I have a wagner buzz gun that is more trouble than it is worth.

I hear you on that Andrew. I bought several Wagner powershots, used them once for lattice or something and tossed them. This is more of a professional tool. I didn't expect to like it as much as I did, or find it so convenient for so many typically time consuming tasks like getting a quick coat on shoe before it goes down, or window muntin etc. There's a cool freedom about not having a cord or hose attached to the unit, and being able to focus on the pieces without having to tend to any attachment.

I haven't used it but have talked with several pro painters at the paint store who love them. They all said great for doors and small projects.

For me on my desk top it distorts about 2 seconds and then clears up, on my iPad no issues with clarity at all.

I tried the sprayer at Sherwin Willliams, I did find it a little loud.

Sometimes the zoom in feature in that publication format is invaluable.

The only thing that has happened with my sprayer is that after about 10 gallons, which is a few miles when measured in quarts, one of the battery packs stopped holding charge. They sent me a new one.

When these came out I thought I had found just the thing I need. If you read the fine print you'll find these little sprayers have a service life of 50 gallons of paint before needing to be re-built. It can be rebuilt twice if I remember correctly, though it may have been only once.
For me that is far too short a life for what I wanted.

Did you read the last paragraph of the review? Just how quickly do your $400 carpentry tools pay for themselves and what do their depreciation cycles look like? The roi on this looks pretty good to me.

Thanks, zoom function worked this time. The repacking they mention, do not see that anywhere in the manual. Not sure what that means.

                          per Graco;
"TrueCoat Plus includes 2 spray tips and has twice the life of TrueCoat."

Not a good design if that is correct in my opinion at 150 gal life, a throw away sprayer, as a Pro rated. Really? Most Pro's do not think they will be tossing $400 guns when they need service. You know, a good HVLP can last a long time and would cost pennies per gallon to use.Seems like a consumer aimed product in a way . Can not find a spec on what the life span is according to Graco. Maybe they will have a redesign or have a more serviceable model.

                            Andrew

The Truecoat is not the same tool as the proshot.

The proshot does have a 150 gal lifespan. This means I can run 600 qts through it for about $400. 600 qts will probably take me a couple of years to achieve. So, about $200 annually to have a convenience tool that costs me about $.75 each time I use it, and has the collateral benefit of saving wear and tear on dragging my $1500 turbine or my $3500 aa out into the field to shoot a pile of site built shelves? Also, each time i run a qt through it, im saving a man hour or two of labor? I get to do this 600 times? Yup, I'll take them odds. Call it the grocery getter in the fleet!

I can see this tools value for airless equipped house painters where you don't want to get out your airless rig and then clean it for a little bit of pick up work. For someone equipped with HVLP cup gun it doesn't make much sense. You can get a compressor drivin cup gun for under $100. The cleaning time would be about the same, they are both cup guns. I use 3M PPP cup liners that allows me to change out and switch materials, they use Graco cup liners that you throw away after 1 use wasting materials The killer for me is adding the weight of a battery to an already heavy cup gun. Even the guy in the video has to use both hands to spray on the flat. I am impressed with the coverage they were getting with latex paint though. I would guess that that's the market that Graco is after
