Deck paint?
I have agreed to have a deck painted (don't ask!). Exposed deck, PT wood, not in the greatest shape. Previously stained solid, stain half peeled.
Does anyone have experience with SW Floor&Porch, BM Floor&Patio or anything like that but better?
No need to get into why I shouldn't be doing this :)

Re: Deck paint?
I've found the SW product doesn't hold up very well. This is on my own house and a couple of customer projects as well. I'd cross them off the list.

Came upon this article about finishing deck and porch boards.

Re: Deck paint?
I jumped the shrark a couple of years back and started painting my deck. The premium line Behr stuff from HD is surprisingly good.

Re: Deck paint?
I just used some of their solid body stain "Behr Solid Color Deck, Fence and Siding Stain" on a job. Stuff looks just like paint and I was also surprised at how nice it was. The older stuff on the house looked in great shape and we were convinced it was paint until we found the can. Might work well for you.

Re: Deck paint?
Thanks Norm.
Guys, I need PAINT, not stain. Customer requirement. The can has to say "paint" or "enamel" on it or they'll blow a fuse.

Re: Deck paint?
Dump the Behr product in a bucket that says PAINT. :)
I have used various types of porch and deck paint inside my trailer and it lasts about 3 months in that enclosed dry place.“Racism is man's gravest threat to man - the maximum of hatred for a minimum of reason.”

Re: Deck paint?
"Solid body stain" IS paint. Deck stain is formulated to be more resistant to abrasion that house paint, since few people walk on their walls

Re: Deck paint?
No. Any deck solid stain I've ever used is low sheen. The SW paint is full gloss and the BM is "pearl", which is semi-gloss. It's a very obvious difference.

Re: Deck paint?
Well, yeah, paints come in different sheens. If the client is looking for glossy then you can't really win. Glossy is really going to show the traffic patterns. And glossy is also going to be very slippery when wet. And glossy is going to magnify every imperfection in the imperfect decking materials. Semi-gloss only slightly less so.
Not also the word "porch" in "floor" in the names of the paints listed. Implies a covered surface to me. Makes a difference as to how much UV inhibitor is going to be in a formulation, I would think.
I'm guessing that any "floor" or "porch" paint would be an improper product selection for an exposed deck

Re: Deck paint?
NW, I know all that. You're preaching to the choir. The point of this thread is to get feedback on various porch & floor paints.
Edit: Some porch paints specifically state deck use and some state patio use. None prohibit uncovered use, so I don't think UV is an issue.Last edited by dgbldr; 09-12-2010 at 12:27 PM.

Re: Deck paint?
You've probably already made your decision but I thought I'd chime in. I used Behr Porch and Floor paint on my own deck around the pool. I first sealed everything with Bullzeye primer then two coats of paint. The pool water hasn't hurt it any and the sun doesn't seem to have done any damage yet. Deck boards are too far gone to seal and at around 1000 sf I can't afford to tear it down and start again so it seemed the best option to get a couple more years out of it. It's only been about four months so take it for what it's worth.

Re: Deck paint?
Couple years ago I used a sanded paint specifically for decks. It was in the mistake bin at the local Ace and was some sort of horrible mauve/pink. I was just using it for temp slip resistance on some ramps and stairs on a job, it held up surprisingly well for 6+ months. I believe it was called Deckcote (not the elastomeric) .
