So, I'm eating my second rib eye of the evening, thumbing through the channels, and I land on the Food Channel. 'Diners, Drive-Ins, & Dives', a favorite, gives way to 'Food Feud'.

This particular episode features Chicago's best Italian beef sandwich. Al's #1 vs Mr Beef. I'm ready to toss my rib eye for an Italian, they look so good. What say you Chicago boys?

Don't recall ever eating at either one of them (although I've eaten at so many dog/beef stands all over the city, I probably had one at some point). But eye-talian beef sammiches (or just "beef" for short) is served at every hot dog stand in every neighborhood in the city. And it's all pretty good.

Great website, I read every word and link in it, best of luck in your venture. In your link to the Lawrence Berkeley Laboratories' MoWiTT Reno facility, I visited there when they were doing their triple glazed studies, this was at the time I was bringing them data showing retrofitting dual pane windows and wall insulation was not doing any good at all, in fact many owners were experiencing higher utility costs to say nothing of the leakage and dry rot problems being experienced by faulty products and installations.

Again, best of luck, you are providing a real service that is sorely needed, my only advice is to drop the word "green", it has become associated with every con man and faulty procedure known to man, just substitute "natural" for "green" and use it in your presentations.

Yes they are that good.

For a change of pace you can go with a combo, eyetalian beef with an eyetalian sausage, red sauce with peppers.

Mustard on hot dogs is forbidden and punishable by death, I believe it was the only crime exempted from George Ryans capital punishment amnesty. I am certain someone else here can confirm this.

For you Philly guys your cheese steak is god awful terrible, then there's the Tasty Cakes, the only thing tasty about them is the packaging. I will give you the Yuengling, good beer.

I was going to say something but I didn't want to embarrass you. Mustard goes on hot dogs. Everyone here knows someone putting ketchup on a hot dog would have to be some kind of a freak. Ketchup is for fries.

I don't remember Al's when I lived in Chicago, but I sure had my share of combos at Portillo's, including the hot gardiniere! Or a bunch of hot dogs with sport peppers!

Now out here on the east coast, we have few, very few, places for a good hot dog, so instead they serve clam bellies on a roll. Good, but I'll take a beef or combo anytime!

I finally found someone who bottles hot gardiniere up in New Hampshire that I can get locally, so I use it to fix things!!

I should offer a disclaimer that their "pan" I'm referring to is actually a thick crust.

Good pizza joints are all over the city. Deep dish is good, but I slightly prefer thin crust myself...

So hard to choose...

Downtown: Uno's (not the chain) is good (except for the constant line of tourists waiting to get in). Still located in the basement of an old 3-flat, great pie, old-fashioned bar with the game on the TV, checked tablecloths... hard to beat.

Gino's East (if you can deal with the tourists)

Malnati's

Far West Side: I like the Home Run Inn. (They also do frozen pizza for the grocery stores, which I think is atrocious, but in Chicago it outsells all the major national brands).

My neighborhood: Pizza Metro, opened in a storefront by a couple of kids from Italy a few years ago. I walk over and pick up a pie there once or twice a month to eat in front of the TV.
