Not related, but 35 years ago today the Edmund Fitzgerald went down in Lake Superior. About halfway down on this link is an audio of the radio conversation between the Captain and some other ships before they went down, pretty interesting.

I just finished coaching a k thru 2nd grade flag football team and did a Animoto slide show for all the kids. Got each kids carrying the ball and ripping flags...they loved it. I downloaded the DVD file and burnt one for each family to play on the TV, the quality was excellent.

Got to thinking about the captain of the Edmund Fitzgerald and wondering if would have had an iPad with Weather.com if he could have missed that storm. I guess it would have depended on AT&T?

Would he have had time to avoid it even with Weather.com? Big, slow ships... It's hard to know just how bad a storm will be, what it will do when it hits where you are and predict which bad one will be too bad to go through.

Perhaps is it had access to todays doppler radars & satellite info...

Makes me think about a couple seasons. I remember one run of just 100 miles in Bristol Bay. Was a relatively small storm front coming. We had very good weather reports, and it was going to be a bit of a blow, but thought we could sneak across w/o problems. For some reason it multiplied in strength right as it hit us and instead of 30-40k winds, we had 50+. The swell was pushed up from about 15' to around 20' (and you have to know we were on a Bristol Bay gill netter, which are limited in LOA to 32').

Our weather reports came from the same weather reporting stations that monitored that area for NOAA and the US military, which was very active in the area at the time (1984).

My brother wound up in a Force 9. That one was the captain's stupidity- he thought they could beat a storm across the gulf of Alaska. Never try to outrun a storm.

From the little storm a couple weeks ago. They did pretty well closing down the lake.

I've done a lot of boating on the Great Lakes, it could be perfectly calm day and in a matter of minutes you think you are starring in an old sea movie sailing around the horn.

I remember one time a buddy of mine and I had a boatload of girls out on Lake Erie when a storm blew in without much warning. It was all he could do to keep the boat headed into the waves, we would have green water going past the cabin windows... and this was on a 52 footer. We all got "lucky" that night, and it had nothing to do with the girls in their bikinis.
