Owens Corning Duration Shingles
I usually use Certainteed roofing products when I can (personal preferance), but am using OC on my current project due to color availability. When I opened the first bundle, I noticed a plastic strip covering the "Surenail Strip". I wondered how the tar strip would adhere to the plastic, seeing as how the plastic is used in the first place to keep the shingles from sticking together in the bundle. Is this a different type of plastic?
I called my supplier and they assured me the plastic was supposed to stay. I got the same answer from OC when I called them. I am really, really skeptical. I can't imagine shingles would be designed to have to remove the strip (imagine a 100 sq. roof!), but how do they work? Can anyone tell me from experience how well these shingles seal to each other?
Thanks for your feedback.
Jeff

Re: Owens Corning Duration Shingles
I Have used about 100 sq of OC's in the last 2 years. I believe the shingles actually adhere to the tar just below the sure nail strip.(I could be mistaken it's been a while.) Either way I have gone back and on a hot day it was almost imposable to get them to lift without tearing. They make a good product you have no worries.

Someguy is correct. The adhesive hits below the strip when the shingles are placed correctly. The strip is to keep them from sticking together in the bundle.

Re: Owens Corning Duration Shingles
Just finished this roof today. I looked at scrap shingles on the ground where I could see them. Not only does the entire 1/2" wide tar strip on the underside of the shingle land squarely in the middle of the plastic strip (at the 5-5/8 reveal), but when the shingles are shot down, the plastic breaks away from the tar due to the impact from the nails.
I am so not impressed with these. I would love for someone at OC to sell me on how these actually work. I will be checking on these in a few months to satisfy my curiosity.

Re: Owens Corning Duration Shingles
We had about 5 square of Durations blow off last month. Installed in September, blew off in early March. It was an incredible storm, and the house is about 15 feet from the water, but other houses in the neighborhood with old crappy 3-tabs were fine. OC covered the re-roof but I wasn't too thrilled, since we bought them precisely because of their wind rating.

Re: Owens Corning Duration Shingles
That's awful! I like to 6-nail my shingles regardless of location (what does it hurt?). I'm curious to know, was it because the shingles hadn't glued to each other? Or was it because the plastic strip kept the roof from sealing? I realize that if the shingles were installed in September in Maine, they haven't had ideal conditions to seal. It doesn't seem to take a lot of sun to stick good shingles together, though.
Thanks for you feedback. My suspicions are quickly becoming confirmed.

I wouldn't install certainteed anything period but that's a total different subject.
I install the Owens Corning all time with the plastic strip with no problems. They are supposed to be left on.Louisville Exteriors

Re: Owens Corning Duration Shingles
Jeff - I have no idea why they blew off. It was a relatively low pitch roof (I think a 6, maybe 5), facing the ocean, and installed in the fall. So it was definitely less than ideal. But we've used Hatteras shingles without problem in similar conditions.

Re: Owens Corning Duration Shingles
I know what you mean about the plastic strip, It's placement seems like a bad idea, but Ive done a few roofs with them, and haven't had any shingles come off. In fact I put them on my fathers roof about two years ago, and I was just on it a couple weeks ago, and everything looks fine.
