mathews brothers windows
1160.1
Does anyone have any experience with Mathews Brothers windows here in the Northeast?
I'm considering Anderson 400's or Pella 450's for my addition and was wondering how the Mathews Brothers product stacks up. The factory is only a few miles down the road but I don't know much about them.
Any info on quality and service would be appreciated.

Yup
The automatic filter kicks in when mine begins to talk...
Mathews Brothers is located in Belfast, Maine. Alliance seems to be their big brand.

Click on your name and there are some things to fill in.
In the mean time you can tell us a bit about yourself.
GC, trade contractor, lead carpenter, whatever.
Where you are, what you do, etc.
Are you a contractor?
The post you initiated the windows are for your home, do you do work for others in construction?

Re: mathews brothers windows
I do survey & drafting & construction inspection for a civil engineering firm.
The reason I posted is we usually spec Anderson for our clients buildings. Recently, we were asked by one client to spec windows by Mathews Brothers since they are in-state.
We have not dealt with their product and so aren't familiar with their quality.
As it happens, I'm also doing an addition this summer, and am willing to by a local product if the quality is comparable to Anderson.

Seein' as how you're allied with a large outfit that specs windows, I would get the rep on the phone and ask for a personal demo of the product, on your premises. They oughta jump outta their chair at the chance.

Re: mathews brothers windows
We use Mathews Brothers wood windows occasionally. They are historically correct, traditional windows, made the same way for 150 years. Good quality if you spec the right wood. They were using Radiata pine junk for a while but are now back to eastern white pine as their standard. I don't have any experience with their other lines.
I agree with David, call them up and ask them to do a lunch-and-learn. One good thing that's come out of this recession is that vendors will bend over backwards to get your business.

Mike:
I Googled them and see that they make both wood and vinyl windows, do their wood windows have real sloped sills that go under their jambs with real honest to goodness horns? I've had good success with Andersen 400 series, but would jump to Mathews (if they were available here without shipping over the Rockies) in a minute to get real sills without mitered corners to leak."But one also finds in the human heart a depraved taste for equality, which impels the weak to want to bring the strong down to their level, and which reduces men to preferring equality in servitude to inequality in freedom"

Re: mathews brothers windows
Dick, as I recall they match your specs, but it's been a few years since we've installed their double hungs so I'm not 100% sure. They only offer compression-style jamb liners which aren't as nice as Andersen 400 series' or Marvin Ultimate's jamb liners. We frequently install their "Barn Sash" which are putty glazed, sash only. We've had trouble lately with another company's traditional let-in sills leaking at the jamb, so I don't know if that's the answer to your problem though.
