Another animal cruelty case in Omaha
Some of you may remember a thread I started a while back about a pitbull someone left outside that almost froze to death. Well, here is another freaking loser from the same part of town. She forgot about the dog because she was staying someplace else for a while after a break-in at her house.? And nobody noticed. Plus, she gets to keep her other dog because apparently she wasn't neglecting that dog!?
I heard about this first thing this morning and it completely ruined my day.

Why do I look at these things? It makes me so angry. How can someone be so insensitive and heartless? They should be chained outside without food or water - Forget that - Now I'm as bad as them.

Re: Another animal cruelty case in Omaha
I feel the same way.
It's sad because these animals have absolutely nothing and nobody in the world they can depend on except their caregiver. That poor dog died a lonely, miserable death and could do nothing to stop it.
BT, stories like that, at least for me, show the "real" world instead of the "rosy" version that many want to believe exists.

I won't go that far, but these kinds of stories should serve as a wake-up call to legislators & decent folks in our society. There should be punishment fitting the crime in these cases & a felony conviction to boot.
We're all too ready to lock up recreational drug users - situations where there's no victim - but often turn a blind eye to animal abuse & neglect. Our priorities are certainly screwed up.Greg

Re: Another animal cruelty case in Omaha
But on the other hand a couple miles from me there was a man that had 172 dogs taken from him when the vet examined them only one had a bite marks, them the rest were healthy and clean
Since the dogs have been in custody 28 dogs have died and 40 more are infected with parvo
The Humane Society of the United States real screwed this one up...Beware of the man whose belly does not shake when he laughs

Re: Another animal cruelty case in Omaha
I'm seeing more and more cases of people losing their homes and leaving pets behind, or just
taking them "for a ride". A local animal shelter near me has installed cameras to record the
parking lot at the shelter as people were stopping by at night and dropping off boxes (yes, boxes) of animals. In one incident, 18 cats were crammed into 4 cardboard boxes like sardines. Yes, they all survived also. Wonder how the "dumpers" would feel if somebody crammed them into a box and dumped it somewhere....?Renaissance Restorations LLC

Re: Another animal cruelty case in Omaha
I do not like animals to be abused. But the word abuse is often left to the extreme cases like the ones you guys are talking about.
It bothers me just about as much when I see soneone get a dog or cat and is never around to care for them, play with them. I know someone who wanted a dog. Problem is that he is gone at least 10 hours a day and since he is single young man then gone most evenings cruising and up the the "devilment" as my grandmother used to say. This guy keeps the dog in a porter for probably 20 hours a day, won't play with it, cannot understand why when he lets the thing out it goes nuts running around the house knocking everything over.
I thougth about stealing the dog from him and putting it in an adoption center in hopes that it would be better off. Knowing him I bet he would call the police to report a break in and I would end up getting caught.

Re: Another animal cruelty case in Omaha
I won't tell :)
I started this and the other thread because I like all animals, dogs especially, and I hope to increase awareness, at least among us here, of the abuses that are all around us. I have had dogs my whole adult life, many of whom were rescued from severe abuse, and it's really sad to see how screwed up they are when I first get them.

Re: Another animal cruelty case in Omaha
Well, I made it two days before I decided to look at this thread, and unfortunately, it was as bad as I expected.
Abuse could be termed in levels, but there is no level for fuc.... stupidity! I'm real tired of my tax dollars churning out GD dummies, and then later we have to support them. A pet counts on their owner for pretty much everything, rural and country areas perhaps have perks that help animals survive, but "forgetting" your dog for a couple weeks is just plain bull.
We adopt our dogs, in our case, Labs4Rescue, and our latest is a sweetheart that traveled from 5 states away....because in this case someone had sense enough to take her back to the vet so he could get her adopted.
I'm real tired of stupid! Maybe its time to answer 2 out of 5 questions correctly to keep your welfare check?? Awwww, don't get me going!!Take Care

Re: Another animal cruelty case in Omaha
One of the issues I have with even the adoption process for pets. About every month there is some sort of fair or gathering that has pets up for adoption. I really don't think these are a good thing. Often seems to be done at a neighborhood fair where there are families. What mom and dad are going to say no to their kids in the middle of an emotional plea in front of a bunch of other families. Makes me wonder how many of those pets get either returned or abused later.
Anyway, I feel that some folks really need to be interviewed before they are given a pet.

Re: Another animal cruelty case in Omaha
I have been to a couple of these adoption fairs but each one was sponsored by one of the rescue groups, and they won't let you take one home on the spot. They want a home evaluation by a trained interviewer, my wife gets a call maybe once a month to do them.

Re: Another animal cruelty case in Omaha
James,
Thanks for that information. I have never really stopped to talk to the folks about the way it is done. I assumed that they had a bunch of kittens and puppies there ready to go home that day. Kind of hard for me to think that you see the puppy/kitten you want and had to wait. I did not know that. I partly assumed that because I often see it as part of the advertised program for the day. Kind of assumed that if you were thinking about taking home a pet this was a place to come and get that set up.
Sorry for speaking about something I did not know all the facts about.

Re: Another animal cruelty case in Omaha
My neighbor rescues animals and finds them homes. She is hard core about qualifying potential candidates and plays no games. Initial site visits, interviews, contractual agreements, surprise visits.
2 years ago, I rescued a basset hound off the streets of my neighborhood who had been severely abused and was starving to death. It took me 9 months to get him back to his normal weight, to get him to trust people again, and for him to get over his submissive urination. My neighbor found him a great home after screening 100 or so applicants. Then that one home was subjected to investigation by her before she gave the go ahead.
Not all are that thorough, but the ones who really care are because they don't want those animals abandoned again.
