Grab bars on tiled shower walls
Anyone used these? http://www.wingits.com/Fastening-Systems_c_7.html
A customer of mine bought a couple of Moen grab bars... very standard tubing type... and wants them mounted in a shower with porcelain tile over backerboard. No studs where they want to go, of course. I emailed the Wing-its people and they don't recommend using their stuff to mount Moen bars, for reasons that I didn't dig into much, and may or may not matter.
Anyway, what do you guys do when you need to mount something like this with no wood backing, and need it to ADA standards?

Re: Grab bars on tiled shower walls
Is it that they don't want you to use the Moen for a real reason other than wanting you to buy their products. I have wanted to try them out but never have. I do see that they have a different drill bit to use. I thought they used to only recommend using a hole saw.
This is a tought situation for me. I hate it when I get calls for these types of installations. Last set of grab bars I installed in bathroom the wall backed up to the inside of a closet. I removed a bit of drywall in the closet and installed blocking from the backside.

They work. Of course I moved not too long after... Why didn't they like the moen? I used with their bars and with some other commercial ones that needed new holes drilled but the manu was aok with that. If you want the ADA approval return the moen and use theirs. Any way to open the wall behind? I would that first given th opportunity.

Use the Moen product:

I installed 6 grab bars with Home Care anchors for an elderly couple two years ago and have had no calls saying they have failed.Richie Poor...until the next presidential election cycle...

Re: Grab bars on tiled shower walls
I assume this thread is directly related to your large diameter tile drill bit thread from this past week?
It's a very simple process to install them, and if I remember correctly, I needed to physically open a box to understand the process myself. No, the anchors don't show. The grab bar escutcheon covers all mounting hardware and the metal plate the grab bar mounts to has a foam backing that resists water penetration.
Related thread. The flash presentation shows everything in a wall assembly:

Re: Grab bars on tiled shower walls
Yeah, the wing-its go thru a 1-1/4" hole. I've used them, borrowed a sh!tty diamond holesaw from my plumber since he was there at the time, if I use them again I want it to go faster and easier. What size hole for the Moen dealies?

Re: Grab bars on tiled shower walls
I not only found the job file but I'm currently holding the surplus hardware from the project in the original packaging. 1 1/4" hole required. I would scan and post the instruction manual but my still sufficient, all-in-one phone/fax/copier/scanner doesn't have a Windows Vista driver available. I can fax it to you if you would like.

Re: Grab bars on tiled shower walls
David,
I agree with Richie go with the Moen mounts.
I have used them on tile, fiberglass and drywall, the hardware is not visible once the bar is installed.
Properly installed they do not move.

You can view the specs and install at the link.
The Moen bars install very easily to them.

Re: Grab bars on tiled shower walls
Just wondering if anyone has used the linear drain http://www.quickdrainusa.com/ seems like an easy install.

Re: Grab bars on tiled shower walls
nope but looks like a neat concept. I was kind of surprised to see it shown in the picutres with only one shower head. I was thinking it might be something you would use when you have all those body spray showerheads in use.
Actually I thought you had it confused with David wanting to know how to keep water out from under the barn doors in another thread.

Re: Grab bars on tiled shower walls
Beezo: I need to go curbelss on this on, have 8'x52" to work with. Doing layout and floor bracing right now, everything is sound and tight , just alittle re-assurance against future movement . I think this drian will work out nice for me , since I can place in more than one.
