I have a copy of this book from 1911
Here is a link to a free "E" version
http://books.google.com/books?id=plY...ings#PPA179,M1
There are some interesting details around page 99 for cold storage bldgs etc.
The Ice house doors are not so different from some state of the art German doors.
It seems that when we started using "cheap" energy We forgot some good stuff
The window details page 86 allow for drainage...what a concept
And there is something "funny" on page 9Last edited by John B; 01-03-2010 at 05:45 AM.

Re: 99 years ago
Very cool, thanks. I downloaded it in a PDF, looks like it was written prior to copyright laws. I am not an attorney but I am curious what Kinkos will if asked to print and bind.

Re: 99 years ago
I found some originals for sale for around $100, that would be neat to have. I will check the reprints.

Re: 99 years ago
Great find. Thanks!
Also check out "Old House Measured and Scaled Detail Drawings for Builders and Carpenters" (Dover reprint edition of "Details of Building Construction"), also by Radford. Very highly recommended.

Radford produced many other books of details. I suspect any of them would be well worth having. I have seen nothing else that even comes close.Last edited by hdrider_chgo; 01-03-2010 at 09:06 AM.

Re: 99 years ago
hdrider, Radford published a ton of construction related titles and the co. was based in Chicago in the "Radford Building". I was lucky to be able to buy the originals of many of his publications before numbers went crazy.
I have three of "Details of Construction" originals in my library and have frequently referred to them for ideas.
One of the greatest sources of info. he published was "American Builder" magazine. The issues from the twenties and thirties are packed with great pictures and info. regarding techniques of construction of that era."ALS IK KAN" - Stickley

Re: 99 years ago
I like the details because they are drawn "exactly to scale"
To me they are more "readable" than most that I see these days.
Including the ones at JLC and GBA
